Before I engage in several lifetimes of experimentatioin is anyone aware of a kyma patch that has a lot of Fizmo about it. The marketing BS was that it was a transwave synth. As tape op reported;

Transwaves are wavetables, which many other synths have used, but transwaves are much different in that that each one has many loop points rather than just one where the sound can cycle back around.

That doesn't sound at all tricky for kyma but the musical abilities to control those wavetable samples is obviously what's key.

I'm a kyma newbie and although I've put together quite a few patches that make some noises I like I've a feeling that this is beyond me!

Any one care to point me in the direction of a KyFitzmo patch!?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike,
Have you ever come across any recordings of it online?

The Fizmo ( http://homepage.mac.com/synth_seal/html/fizmo.html )

uses, like the EPS-16 and ASR Samplers and TS-10 Workstation a technique called Transwave Synthesis.

It is the Ensoniq kind of wavetable synthesis and sounds a bit smoother then others (waldorf for example).

For the TS-10 and the FIZMO Ensoniq has prepared a ROM set of interpolated wavetabels (the transwaves). With the ASR you can use your own samples or ... for better results use a Windows software like:
"Tranzilon" to generate samples with a smoothed/interpolated waveform cycles (like the ones created by ensoniq...)
http://avg.home.xs4all.nl/tranzilon/info.html

In Kyma it is easy to create similar
sounds with the: CrossfadingMulticycleOscillator and envelope or LFO modulations of course.

The ASR and FIZMO can kind of "Scrub" (move a sampleloop) through a sample which results in an "harsh" endless evolving single or multicyle waveforms depending on the loop length.

Easy done in Kyma with the sample prototype by moving the loopstart and endpoint together ...

The real reason why the Ensoniq FIZMO and the ASR 10 etc. can sound so great is the very high quality of the FX Section (Very good ... yes ... maybe the best reverbs of an "onboard" FX Section of an hardware synthesier/sampler).

Ensoniq sold the FX-Section of the ASR-10 as a outboard unit called DP4 and DP4+
The DP4 became a insider tip for high quality but low budget reverb and FX sounds..

"Dry" single layer transwave sounds tend to sound "harsh" and very "old school digital". anyway great for soundscapes...

http://homepage.mac.com/synth_seal/html/ds_ts10.html
Demos of the TS-10 ... it has the same synthesier + and FX section then the FIZMO and the ASR.

all the best
chris

ps:
I still use an Ensoniq ASR-10 in the Studio... The main reason is when sampling with the ASR, it tends to "color" everything in a nice "larger then life" way.
Sometimes i also sample Kyma sounds with it ;-)

Also you can use the ASR via the sample inputs as a "2 channel input, 8 channel output" DP4 like FX unit ...

Thanks very much for such a detailed answer.

I'd spent a little time working on crossfilters and although it makes a nice ambient sound not quite enough going on. As for effects I totally agree. I was running through an eventide h8000fw on the blackhole and others. Gets close but not quite granular enough.

It was a thread on gearslutz that got me thinking.

But

Was the sort of thing I'm after although of course that is multitracked.

Thanks once again I resume research and experimentation!

MWaveSimple.zip

I attached one of my first kyma sounds ever ... it was my first try to build a wavetable synth after using the pacarana for a few hours.
It can sound a bit like a FIZMO... maybe it is a nice starting point.

all the best
