Has anybody tried using the Behringer Rotary BCR 2000 with Kyma? It seems like a poor man's alternative to the motormix, but I was wondering if anybody might have anything to say about this. It seems appealing because it has "endless rotary encoders", so I assume that when you change presets in the VCS and you move a fader it would move from the right value, unlike with most other midi controllers that have normal knobs and faders (which make the VCS faders jump from the preset to the old position of the physical fader when you first move them). There's also the Fader BCF 2000, which has motorized faders, but I don't imagine it would work properly with Kyma like the motormix does (maintaining two-way communication with Kyma). Any comments?

Unfortunatly, output from VCS is implemented for MotorMix only;
controllers don't send midi feedback...too bad.

Thanks for your answer KX! So, as I thought the motorized one wouldn't work, but I'm still wondering if the rotary one would, even without Kyma sending it information when it changes presets (which as you said it doesn't). I think it depends on whether the controller sends absolute values or if it can be tweaked to just send values relative to whatever the fader position is at that point. I wrote to Behringer to ask them, but they haven't answered. I will post the answer when I find out. I imagine there should be a way to take advantage of the endless rotary faders to make it work with presets in Kyma. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part.

Say, are there a lot of Kyma users in Quebec? Man, I miss Canada! :-(

I think we are 2 Kyma users in Quebec, I don't know about the rest of Canada; our country is so (too?) large!

I was at an Ambient Ping show in Toronto a month or so ago and one guy there was discussing Kyma with someone else and said "there's only seven people in Canada that have a Kyma system". I interjected and said "actually there's eight". Haha, not sure if there's any truth in what he said, but still, I feel like a minor celebrity:P

Actually, the number is a lot higher...
But some people are shy so you may not have heard from them.

People have told us some amazing stories of being approached by fellow Kyma-ites on airplanes or at concerts because they were wearing a Kyma T-Shirt or reading Kyma X Revealed. You never know who might be sitting next to you!

In Japan a few years back there was a sort of toy that allowed you to enter your interests into it, and it would send out signals to other similar devices. If two devices were in a five meter radius and their interests matched, they'd start beeping, the beeping increasing in frequency until it reaches a continous tone when the two devices get within a few centimetres of each other. Very much like a metal detector finding change in the sand.

I propose Symbolic Sound make a Kyma accessory along these lines for all Kyma users to wear. Perhaps around the neck as an unbreakeable collar. Thus we would be able to find each other and talk about how cool it is to have a Kyma.

Maybe we are all prisoners to the Kyma bug ?

Yes!

And if we move further than 500 metres from our Capybara, then it explodes!

I remember that Kurt told me recently that a couple of Capybaras were bought in Montreal, I think by the CIRMMT. So there must be some Canadian Kyma users there too. I tried to get the University of Victoria and the Banff Centre to get Capys a couple of years ago, but nothing came of it. Spending a year in Banff without a Capybara (before I had my own) was not a nice experience! (The only advantage was that it made me learn some supercollider, which later helped my programming chops in kyma a lot)

I would be very curious to know how many "prisoners of the kyma bug" there actually are out there (at least Kyma owners). Anybody has a guess?

So, back to the midi controllers topic... Thanks for the tweaky link Franz! That might come in very handy. Does the forum administrator have any input about this? Do you know if it's possible to get the Behringer Rotary BCR 2000 to work with the VCR presets? Thanks!
