The second in our run of three exclusive Thom Yorke remix EPs, this instalment features reinterpretations of tracks from The Eraser by Four Tet and Cristian Vogel. Given the fearsome line-up of artists tackling the source material, these guys are clearly keen to bring their A-game to the table, and certainly, this is the best remixing work Hebden's laid down for a good long while, subtly resculpting 'Atoms For Peace' with all surplus materials removed, reconfiguring the original around simple, shuffling acoustic drums, electric piano and of course, Yorke's vocal. Hebden shifts chord changes from major to minor at key moments, tampering with the mood of the piece and in so doing producing an uncommon emotional resonance - pretty difficult to pull off within the context of a remix. Cristian Vogel steps up next, with a resculpting of Eraser standout Black Swan. Vogel quite sensibly preserves the slippery bassline of the original, whilst processing the guitar parts and exchanging the beat for a swinging, hip hop-tinged crunch. Fittingly, Vogel's second remix erases the Yorke vocal altogether, instead bringing some finely worked beats to the table, peppered with clanging metallic echoes and a caustic technoid funk. Brilliant.
