I am having a problem downloading some of these examples... the old "invalid BOSS" file error.

I use Netscape on a Mac. I select the file and "Save as Source". Then I use "Import" in Kyma.

"Sample with Looping Release" and "runchy" (in Tips and Techniques) work fine.

"polyrhytmic stereo chopper" and "Rhythmic chopper w/subdivisions" give the "invalid BOSS..." error.

I haven't tried David's Haas Effect yet.

Any suggestions? I did exactly the same thing on each file. (I downloaded them several times just to be sure.)

Bill,

I have consistently found that when problems like this occur, the "forum" code prepends a mini-header on the front of the file. It is 236 bytes that need to be removed.

The correct starting code for the Kyma headers is "BOSS 980000". If you open these downloaded files in a text editor, you can probably spot that "BOSS 980000" and simply delete all text from the front of file to that code. After you do that Kyma can load the file.

I, too, am STILL having problems opening up these two files. I get the BOSS file error, as well. yes, When I open them up in a text editor (word) there is data before the Boss header. However, if I delete everythin before the "Boss 98000" header, then save the file, then import it into Kyma, then try to open it, I still get an error. ALL of the other files download for me just fine.

What text editor do you all use? Perhaps I am not seeing some charictors as I am opening in Word and then saving as a "text only" file in Word, then attempting to import (which seems to work fine) and then it fails when I attempt to open the file.

If anyone out there would like to MAIL me the Chopper and PolyrhymicChopper sounds, I would really appreciate it! Send it to: Vanceg@earthlink.net

Any thoughts on what may be preventing me from opening these files..... am I not deleting enough of the "junk"from the beginning of the file? How come most files open just fine and these two do not? HELLLP.

I sympathise with your dilemma. SSC have posted a few interesting patches which will not run for me due to the dreaded 'invalid boss' problem. Something is amiss here. Can't it be sorted ?

Guys... get yourself a "REAL" text editor like EMACS. It can do wonders for you. I'm not surprised that editing in Word would destroy the file format. You need something that can remove the extra bytes cleanly without corrupting the rest of the file.

I'll try E-mailing my corrected files to you.

Wouldn´t the easiest thing be for SSC to fix the problems at their end of the connection...?

This problem has been known for some time now, but still nothing has been done about it. Kind of a drag.

I'm puzzled since we are able to download the Sounds from the forum using both Explorer and Netscape and import them without problems.

The easiest workaround in the interim might be to simply use Explorer to access the forum and download the Sounds. We have not had reports of problems from people who are using Explorer. (we are able to download the Sounds with Netscape and Explorer both).

striphdr.zip

Here is a little utility that will strip extraneous headers from any Kyma file (including none at all). It allows you to select any file with a file browser, and it renames that file xxxx.bak (where xxxx is the original root filename). The output is always named xxxx.kym. So you never have to worry about destroying the original file.

Attached ZIP contains an executable and the source written in a variant of ML. This runs just fine on Win/95, Win/98, Win/98SE, and Win/NT 4.0. I don't know about any other versions of Windows. It does NOT run on Mac.

David McClain,
thank you very much for providing us/me with your wonderfull nice tool. It saved me some time, because I also had problems to get some downloads to work on Kyma. Especially I was interested into all these nice choppers.

Nirto Karsten Fischer

(Note to SSC: downloads were done with Explorer 4 under NT4 - some worked, 'choppers' don't)

I also tried Word and had similar problems. I downloaded the files at work (Netscape on UNIX) and used EMACS, then emailed the files home. They worked fine.

I'm looking at alternatives for use at home, because I don't really want to run EMACS on my Mac. I'll post if I find a simple alternative. (It WOULD be nice if it just worked properly from the outset.)

I finally got them to work using BBedit to crop the junk before "BOSS"...

Whats all this "it would be nice if it worked from the onset" stuff .
Isn't it pretty obvious that this problem is nothing to do with the Kyma system as at the point at which the unwanted text is added, is when the kyma system is not even switched on.

May I suggest that the staff of SSC consentrait on correcting all the incompatabilities and buggs of netscape, microsoft, unix, the world wide web ,every service provider in the world, every bug in every windows ,NT and mac operating system and maybe they could sort out my central heating system while they're at it.

It seems that this forum has given us or rather, David has kindly given us a solution via this forum, but it sounds to me like the implication by some others is that the forum shouldn't have been started until this unforseen problem had been solved.

I believe that this is a great forum and its given me a lot of food for thought but if we are not carefull it can easily become a tool for venting peoples negitivity or taking cheep pot shots . It could very quickly loose its real value.

By chooseing kyma you have prooved yourself to be the type of person who is prepaired to work toward something special and not just wanting everything handed to you on a plate, and you all instantly get my respect. I am proud to be a member of the kyma community, and I'm sure that we can continue to make this a great forum and be a little more considerate as we are special people after all.

Please forgive me if I've misunderstood the tone or implications of any ones posting and please accept my apologee in advance.

All I meant was that it would be nice if I could download the same thing that was uploaded - i.e.: a working Kyma sound.

BTW: I was successful using BBEdit Lite (free download) to remove the extraneous characters.
