I posted this question before, in the topic "Pacarana Firewire setup tricky with Macbook Pro", a few weeks ago.

However I'm having problems again... I was sticking with the express FW card setup, with an Express card with 2 FW 400 ports (both the Konnekt and Pacarana going to one of the 400 ports on the Express card). However I wanted to go back to the setup with the Pacarana going directly into the FW 800 port on my Macbook Pro, and the Konnekt 48 to the Pacarana (with a FW 400 - 800 cable), which seemed to work before. The way I have my computers/monitors set up it's much more ergonomic to use this setup, as I don't need an express card in the MBP and it only uses one port.

It seemed to work initially, then I started getting "Out of real time" errors, just testing it with basic effects in the Overview presets (only one effect running). Then I re-booted everything, and it stopped working all together! Now I can't even select the Konnekt 48 in the DSP status window, it just hangs for ages then goes back to "silent device".

I did upgrade to Kyma 6.62 (from 6.60) before changing the FW setup, but as I did both things at the same time I'm not sure if the software update might have stopped this particular setup working. This is quite annoying, as I really want to avoid using the express card if possible, but I'm forced to go back to using it now. Is this something that can be fixed?

Ok, I just switched back to the express card and the configurations with two FW 400 ports into the MBP...

Now I'm still having problems! In fact exactly the same behavior as with the other FW setup (I was seeing the red "out of real time" error message, and the audio periodically cut out). Just tried to re-boot the whole system again, and tried the other FW port on the Pacarana (not that it should make a difference). I've just got another error message "The Pacarana is not responding. Unhandled FireWire bus reset or a FireWire error. (22)". I haven't seen that one before. I tried "Reload", but the same error message came up again. A few times I've also had problems shutting down the Pacarana properly (a few times it did the thing where it takes 5 seconds to shut down instead of 3, which I believe means it's not shutting down proplerly).

This is extremely frustrating. Perhaps the recent firmware or software update has broken something for my setup??

Hi Martin,

As this problem seems to be unique to your setup, we are going to ask you some more detailed questions via email and ask you to do some tests.

Thanks!

A couple of things that would apply to all set ups:

* Before hot swapping any FireWire or USB peripherals, (including switching them on or off), select Halt in the DSP Status window under Control section where it usually says "Running". Once the new device has been added or removed, choose Initialize DSP from the DSP menu in Kyma.

* If the Paca(rana) front panel is in the drunken butterfly state, and you would like to shut down, touch once to bring it out of the screen-saver. Then touch and hold on the circle until it counts down from 3. Wait for the quote.

* The preferred startup sequence is:
1. Audio interface (Wait for lights and front panel indicators to stop changing)
2. Pacarana (wait for "Searching for Audio Interfaces" message to go away)
3. Launch Kyma

The audio interfaces are generally quite slow to fully boot up. Be sure you wait until they are fully initialized before you start your Pacarana by touching the front panel.

Ok thanks, I'm sure I was following all the correct power up/shutting down steps in the right order, but anyway the problem has gone away now after a few more restarts, and the FW 800 setup is working fine so it's all good! I think maybe it was the Pacarana getting used to the new firmware...

Actually I didn't know about the touching the screen before powering down when the drunk butterfly screensaver is on, so maybe shutting it down "wrong" one time because of this caused the problem to occur. Otherwise I can't think of any other reason for these issues.

Thanks again for your support.
