I spent last night gain balancing my new A&H mixing console. Bob Katz recommends using -20 dBFS as 0 VU, but I found that in order to send back to Kyma (on analog ins and outs) what it puts out, I had to settle on -10 dBFS = 0 VU. Anything else requires input trim adjustments that upset this balance, i.e., Kyma gets back either more than it puts out, or less, depending on the trim setting.

Any thoughts on why this would be so?

I do notice now, that with these ostensibly +4 dBu levels I no longer need any input gain on the Kyma for its analog inputs. When I drove it with unbalanced -10 dBu levels before, I always needed about +12 dB input gain boost inside of Kyma. It felt like I was losing bits that way.

[PS: If this is a totally stupid thing to be concerned about, just say so... I plead newbie ignorance here. ]

Yes, +4 dBu analog = -10 dBFS digital for the Capybara. (The Capybara i/o clips at +14 dBu which is the same as 0 dBFS.)
