When I record directly from Kyma to my Mac, I use the SDII format. This results in a disk file with a kyma-like icon. When I put this file into a DiskPlayer, Kyma always converts the file to AIFF and re-saves it in the System folder. (in: System/Preferences/Translated Documents).

This seems bizarre - why should Kyma have to translate files it created? Futhermore, SDII files created by other programs do NOT get translated.

This translation is undesirable because it slows the compile time and doubles the disk space. Plus, it is easy to confuse which file is actually being used, in case you need to edit it.

I have noted the following:

Kyma-SDII file: type=Sd2f creator=KYMA
Kyma translated file: type=AIFF creator=Anon
"Normal" SDII file: type=Sd2f creator=Sd2a

Is there any way this could be changed? I haven't tried just editing the creator, but that would probably do it. Then the file would have a normal SDII icon, and no translation would occur.

I didn't contact Digidesign, but I have done some investigating on my own. SoundDesigner, Digital Performer, SoundHack, and Toast Audio Extractor *all* set type=Sd2f and creator=Sd2a. Peak and SonicWorx use the same type, but set the creator to "auFM" and "SwRx", respectively.

Kyma can read *all* of these files without translation. It is only when the creator is "KYMA" that the translation occurs. In fact, I can edit the creator and change it to anything else - even arbitrary strings - and it still opens correctly without translation.

If I take an SDII file made by other software (e.g. - SoundDesigner) and change the creator to "KYMA", once again translation is required.

Is this something peculiar to my system, or is it a Kyma thing?
