I've just had my third Kyma crash since getting the firewire interface and switching over to my laptop. The crash is severe - everything locks up except for the cursor which still moves, but can't do anything. Even the secret key combo for "force quit" doesn't work. Power-off is the only remedy. (And loose everythinhg.)

This time it happened while editing the VCS. I don't recall what I was doing on the previous crashes. I had tried increasing the memory allocation, and I thought maybe that fixed it - but not so.

I don't think I've ever had Kyma crash on my desktop machine (in 4 years). So three crashes in as many weeks is bad. This has me very worried about using this as a live setup.

Any suggestions?

Here's something else. While running Kyma, the graphics sometimes get messed-up. VCS controls distort or disappear, the little triangles in the Browser get fuzzy, Timeline graphics get strange.

This persists even after quitting Kyma, and is only corrected by a complete shutdown.

I've been using this laptop for a year, and this only happens when running Kyma.

O.K., there was crash number 4.

Same M.O.: I just un-locked the VCS for editing, and everything froze.

...now crashes 5 & 6. Both while editing VCS.

This is not good.

This is a message for all Kyma users: If you're getting frustrated with a problem, just pick up the phone. Even if you think the office might be closed, give it a try because you might be surprised (and if you leave a message on the voicemail you will get a call back).

Now, from your description, it sounds like it is related to graphics in some way. It *could* be that you have millions of colors selected (it should be thousands).

You did not mention which version of Kyma you are running (should be 5.26). Or whether you are running other software at the same time.

Another thing to try would be to turn *ON* virtual memory (Kyma works best with VM turned on).

In the list of extension in Extensions Manager, do you see any extensions specific to graphics acceleration? After checking the millions of colors and virtual memory, the next thing to try would be turning off the graphics acceleration extensions to see whether they are having an affect.

I've got thousands of colors.

I'm running v5.25 - somehow I missed 5.26. How do I get it?

No other software was running.

Virtual memory was OFF. I've never used it because other programs - notably Digital Performer - won't run with it. I could try it for Kyma only I suppose. (Never used it on the desktop machine where I often run Kyma and Performer at the same time.)

This is a stock iBook - I'm running whatever graphics extensions Apple loaded on it. (There are several extensions that refer to graphics and acceleration.) Are you suggesting turning them ALL off?

(I would've called, but it was midnight - besides, I thought perhaps someone else out there might be using the same setup. Any iBook Kymites listening?)

If the new iBooks have the system installed like the old ones, Apple puts in all of the accelerators for all of the video chips, whether your computer uses them or not.

Please use the Apple System Profiler and check under Displays under the Devices tab to see which kind of graphics chip your iBook is using. Then try, one at a time, disabling the accelerators for that particular chip (starting with the 3-d accelerator if there is more than one accelerator). You will need to reboot your Macintosh in order for each change to take effect.

I am a new Kyma user as of late March, with a new PB titanium 667 MHz 256 MB talking to the Capy through a firewire interface. I initially had frequent (after using Kyma for a few minutes) crashes until Apple replaced a defective logic board. After the replacement, I was still having crashes similar to yours at a rate of one every couple of hours, more often when using the timeline. The screen would freeze, but the pointer would move, buttons would look distorted. My PB was also telling me there were Type 3 errors.

Disabling the "Apple QD 3 HW plug in" and the "ATI 3D 128 Accelerator" using the Extensions Manager seems to have made the system stable. I don't do any 3D stuff and I was too impatient to disable these extensions separately, so one of them was the offender (my PB has an ATI card, so perhaps that was the problem).

good luck,

Mark

When this first happened, I started disabling graphics extensions, and my crashes have stopped. I just checked and I have both of those extensions disabled, too, so there must be a connection.

Do you use virtual memory or have AppleTalk running?

5.26??? When did this come out? I'm still at 5.24! Did I miss the email notice regarding these updates?

Bill,

I spoke too soon. Since disabling those two extensions I mentioned, I have had more moving pointer crashes.

Yes, I have Appletalk activated and set to connect by ethernet. Virtual memory is on (257K). I am using thousands of colors on both my PB and a secondary 17" monitor.

If you have more questions, you can email me @yahoo.com. Just add my username to the front of the address. I'm painting the baby's room (he's due in Aug) so I may be slow to respond.

In the meantime I will continue to troubleshoot until the problem is licked.

Bill-- You called us a few weeks ago and we advised you to try disabling some of the unneeded graphics extensions. Apparently you were able to find a successful combination of extensions that could be removed without affecting the graphics. Could you please post that combination to the forum in case other people run into the same conflict?
