Noticed this the other day on the symsound website
http://www.symbolicsound.com/cgi-bin/bin/view/Community/WebHome

"...Tobias Enhus can lay claim to having the most powerful Kyma system on the planet. Enhus has been using his three-Pacarana rack of sound computation computers with custom-expanded memory..."

Now I'm not exactly feeling limited by the two Gig of sample ram in my Pacarana but does this mean one could upgrade the memory in a Paca(rana)? If so, by how much?

It requires sending your Paca(rana) back to Symbolic Sound, but, yes, it is possible for us to expand the memory to four times its original amount.

Obviously shipping costs are going to depend on where one is sending from, so aside from that what is the cost of the upgrade to max the memory?

Also, what are the benefits? - Just quickly off the top of my head I'd guess it would enable more and longer crossfilters, much more capability for implementing reverb with many delays but there would have to be other benefits I haven't thought of.

Can you provide a comparison of the capabilities of the standard Paca(rana) and a maxed one?

Thanks SSC

I'd like to know, too, how much it would be to get an 8GB Pacarana, as I'm just in the process of ordering one.

Especially at high sample rates I can see more GB being a valuable asset ;-)

The price on the 2 GB memory chips is fluctuating so there is not a fixed price for the memory upgrade. Today (29 March 2010), it would cost $220 for the 4 that would be needed for upgrading the memory of a Pacarana. (For the Paca it would be half this cost).

If you are interested in the larger memories, please contact us so we can give you a current quote and place a special order for the larger memories.

Thanks for the price info SSC, much appreciated.

Can you chime in on the comparison - advantages of extra memory - part of my question when convenient please
regards,
Sean

One assumes you can specify extra ram upon ordering of a new system!?!.....

One benefit of larger RAM would be longer individual samples could be loaded in RAM rather than having to be streamed from disk. This could be especially handy for MultiSample and KeyMappedMultiSamples.

(And yes, the easiest time to expand the memory would be when initially placing an order for the Paca or Pacarana since that would not require a round trip shipping).

Actually, that's what I just did ;-) A Pacarana with 8GB is going to be feeling very much at home here soon.
