Hi to everyone,

I invite you to download a new sound which is a functional emulation of the Roland JX3P synthesizer.

Get the sound here : http://www.symbolicsound.com/zzz/pub/Share/Sounds/JX3P-v1.zip

And the short manual is there: http://www.symbolicsound.com/cgi-bin/bin/view/Share/JX3Pv1Discussion

I hope you'll like it and make a good use of, please don't hesitate to give some feedback.

Cheers,
Cam

Thanks Cam for the great retro synth. Love the sounds! Using it brings up a couple of issues and wishes:

1) It's amazing how DSP hungry this sound is. Especially when you consider I couldn't get more than 6 midivoices out of it on a 20 processor system, and yet I can run several instances of Reaktor 5 and other SoftSynths on my host computer and not run out of cpu power. It would be interesting to know what eats away at the DSPs so much.

2) Whilst creating new presets, I used the Dice function quite often - but it would be nice if there were a way to state by what percentage the parameters should change on each throw of the die - for example a slider next to the die. A way to exclude certain parameters from being affected by the die throw would be great to - perhaps by setting a flag on a widget when editing the VCS.

Perhaps I should stick this into the wishes list!

Andrew

Hi Photonal,

Thanks for your suggestions.
Yes you're right for the DSP power needed to run this sound.
Actually it's not that you can't run 6 voices on a 20 proc system : you can't run 6 voices on any system. That's because there is a bottleneck on one processor, some instructions have to be ran on one processor and this one just can't handle it. The solution to that problem would be to optimize again this sound, and though I have optimized a lot already, I don't have anymore idea where to start trying optimizations. Maybe someone can suggest me solutions to try on this sound ?

Don't forget there is the JX3P lite version which is much more DSP-wise. I'd be curious to know how many voices you can play on a 20 proc system. Could you please tell me?

Cheers,
Cam

You can achieve this by simply clicking on the name of the fader to lock it. When it turns gray it won't be affected by the throw of the dice anymore.

As for the percentage thing, I suppose you could use another fader(s) to scale everything and thus control the range of the variation when the dice are rolled (locking this percentage fader of course).

I haven't had a chance to check out Cam's sound yet, as I've been away from my capy. But it looks interesting and I can't wait to give it a try. Thanks Cam!

Cheers,

H

Hi everybody,

I have updated the sound with an optimization from Kurt.
It really improves the DSP usage, so I recommend everyone to use the new patch instead of the one I posted earlier.

Cheers!

Cam, great - I'll try out the new version right away.
(I got a polyphony of 20 with the lite version btw)

Hector, thanks for the tip regarding excluding parameters when throwing the die.
