For quite a while now I have been wanting to implement some sonification of financial data ideas. Finally the right technologies and data has made it possible. This is more of a proof of concept. Anyway, some of the emerging datascape sound is quite nice! View the video here: IP: Logged |

Very nice! Is that a tool you've written with SmallTalk? IP: Logged |

Very nice! uhm, may i ask where you got the data from? Actually i also plan to do something with economic data for a few weeks and the only thing that keeps me from doing it is the missing data in the right format(ie. text files or tables, anything that can be read by Max msp) Thanks a bunch! I like the Shepard tone mapping! Implies that the stock market could go down infinitely. Imagine the panic that would cause on the stock exchange when that downward slope starts increasing rapidly; if you combine it with a surround-pan, you could literally hear all the money going down the drain. Thanks for the nice comments! @cebec : sorry to disappoint but it isn't a tool created with SmallTalk or any kind of private framework developed in ObjectiveC etc. It's just a simple chain of various apps/data sources. @patrik : the data source I'm using is very limited unfortunately - I contacted various trading data providers but they all wanted *mega* bucks for providing any data - even though I explained I was just building a proof of concept. Ideally, a Bloomberg or Reuters data feed would be fantastic. (The data I'm using is also delayed and is not a continuous stream of real time data). So if anyone has the contacts... please let me and Patrik know. @SSC : Perhaps with a morph of a toilet flushing? ;-) I could imagine an 'art' installation of this right on the trading floor - I could steer the Sheptone from home and do some insider trading lol! P.S. I'm wondering about doing a whole basket of financial instruments... [This message has been edited by photonal (edited 19 April 2011).] IP: Logged |

hey, In the meanwhile i posted my data-question also in the max msp forums and it seems there is a great solution in case you are a max or java programmer. If you have max, There is an example in the exaples/javascript folder called "StockWatch". It reads out any data you want from finance.yahoo.com, in realtime, with a 15 minute delay. If anybody is interested i'll be soon programming a max patch for converting it to OSC or midi CCs that i would share for sure.
