![]() ![]() ![]() quote: Five years next month without issue. This is what I would expect. The Pacarana's electronics should have a long and trouble-free life. That's not to say that failure is out of the question, just that electronics like this has a very long life, if treated properly. Usually it becomes obsolete long before it fails. I have a number of digital electronic devices that are over 30 years old and still going strong. As a general rule the enemy of electronics is high heat (or extreme cold), and moisture. Subjecting electronics to constant extreme changes in temperature shortens life. But even with that it takes a lot of "thermo-cycling" to have a noticeable impact. My guess is that the biggest cause of failure in something like the Pacarana is inadequate ventilation which causes the device to operate well above its maximum safe temperature for a long period of time, which can take its toll. This is one reason that adequate ventilation is crucial. Anyway I would expect it to be very reliable and my sample of one confirms this. Why not ask Symbolic Sound straight up what their field reliability has been? Also ask what are the top five failures? They may not wish to disclose that for business reasons but it cannot hurt to ask. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for your input. I did ask Kyma about their long term track record and Kurt said that this kind of failure was very rare. Knowing about these kinds of circuits as you do, I believe him. My Pacarana sits in a cool studio in the northeast and is well-ventilated with nothing on top of it. So there is nothing I can point to that caused the failure. So fr, Kyma has been very good about communicating with me about this (as they have been in other areas as well). IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() This has to be the first fault that was not an poor/broken FW cable that I have ever heard of, I have had a Capy (it is still rocking it, I wonder how old it is) and a Pacarana for a long time now. We also have one at work, and I know directly three other people with Pacas. I have seen lots of discussion over the years of how to best manage airflow, racking, the temp/fan settings etc, but despite people traveling, gigging, hot and humid environments, I have never heard even a whisper of such a thing. I am sure SSC will work hard to find a solution. I really feel for you personally, these tools become so indispensable, and leave such a gap when they are not present. Just like our coffee machine. Talking of which... The only item I really need to replace is my Pacarana espresso mug. The little chap has faded in the dishwasher. I do hope they make a return in a variety of designs and sizes to the store. Thanks Charlie IP: Logged |
