It's a shame.
Waiting for the new macs to upgrade my MacMini and I found no Firewire in MacBooks and only Firewire 800 in expensive MacBooks Pro.

There is many audio people working with firewire audio interfaces... and Kyma?
What will happen to us if we want a little firewire portable computer?
Thinking to return to XP.
It's a shame.

A simple 800-to-400 cable will work fine with the Kyma - I use one with my current MacBook Pro. But it's still too bad to lose the 400 port.

Thanks RL, I dind't know about this 800-400 compatibility.
At least the new White MacBook has firewire.
I can't understand this Apple move. What's the problem about this firewire port?
Economic? Well, the new White MacBook has this port and it's cheaper.
To discontinue this model? Forcing people to go to MacBook Pro?
A mystery.

if your serious about the upgrade you could grab one of the last releases of mbpros from the shelf of your local retailer. you would save a little money as well. FYi if you haven't noticed on the mac forums there are two hardware features to watch out for if your buying a mbpro or mb: the agere (sp?) fwire chipset and the GeForce 8600M GT video card try and avoid if you can.

BTW a link on the same subject

Apparently, there is a petition for anyone who is in favor of the return of FireWire:

The first reason in the first place that my main computer isn't a Mac
is this kind of behaviour.
I'd like to play with wiimote and osculator but I don't want to buy a mac because of MANY upgrade incompatibilities as soon as the OS version change the 123th number after the comma!!

"only Firewire 800 in expensive MacBooks Pro."
Indeed that's a pity. Fortunately there are 400Mbits port on the MAC PRO
