Delora Software would like to announce the immediate availability of KymaConnect, a Mac OSX connectivity application for Kyma users that adds even more functionality to our PacaConnect product. KymaConnect reduces cost and on-stage or studio setup complexity while offering expanded capability to users of both Paca(rana) and Capybara sound engines.

In a nut shell KymaConnect is everything that PacaConnect is, plus a good bit more. KymaConnect's integrated networking and MIDI functions work in concert to reduce or eliminate additional MIDI interfaces and networking hardware. Paca(rana) owners can obtain full MIDI connectivity between their Mac and the sound engine without additional MIDI interfaces. Both Capybara and Paca(rana) users enjoy the benefits of KymaConnect's built-in MIDI patchbay and advanced router. Networking setups to accommodate Wi-Fi based OSC controllers have less components and cables. Whether on stage or in the studio, KymaConnect makes a Kyma system simpler, less expensive, and more reliable.

KymaConnect's includes the same "PacaProxy" that made PacaConnect such a useful tool. It unleashes the Paca(rana)'s powerful OSC features from the limitations of typical stage and studio Wi-Fi setups. It "bridges" clients on one network to the Paca(rana) on another, with full bi-directional OSC support. Now the full benefits of tablet and smart phone apps like Delora vKi, vKiP, Symbolic Sound's Kyma Control, and TouchOSC, can be obtained with a set up as simple as a MacBook computer connected directly to the Paca(rana).

KymaConnect's "virtual MIDI patch bay" provides an always available connection between up to four (4) MIDI devices and the Paca(rana) or Capybara. With KymaConnect, the Paca(rana) or Capybara can be controlled from an external MIDI keyboard or other controller without running a sequencer or other software. It also provides a handy "virtual MIDI port" that software music applications may use to send and receive MIDI from the Paca(rana). KymaConnect also has advanced MIDI channel mapping capabilities. The channel can be specified for MIDI device sending and receiving, and altered as needed in an easy-to-use routing table. Channel mapping can be used to "mute" (disable) certain channels, or relocate one channel to another.

Capybara also benefit from using KymaConnect. The "CapyProxy" integrates features found in the Delora CapyLink product. This gives Capybara users access to OSC apps like vKi and vKiP. This works in concert with KymaConnects MIDI features to create a powerful "command central" for the Capybara. Capybara users without a Paca(rana) can simply turn off the Paca(rana) features, knowing the will be available if they upgrade their Kyma sound engine. Likewise Paca(rana) users without a Capybara can simply leave CapyLink off. However those fortunate with both can enjoy the convince of using the same MIDI controllers with either sound engine.

Both proxies extend Kyma's OSC "language" with the addition of shortcut commands. These can be used to remote control critical Kyma functions like starting and stopping a sound.

KymaConnect is available for $29.95(USD) at www.delora.com.

Thanks Chris! Your feature request back in April helped to convince me that we were on the right track to add routing and channel mapping. User feedback is always the lifeblood of a product!

We have just released KymaConnect version 1.0.2 This version addresses the following improvements and fixes:

1. Fixed a bug that was preventing properly MIDI Time Code (MTC) operation.

2. The Pacarana virtual MIDI port has been renamed from "Paca(rana)" to "vPacarana". This change was needed to work around a SuperCollider bug where it was unable to handle a CoreMidi device whose name contained parentheses. This change impacts the preference pane when showing the "routing" panel; "VirtualPacarana" is now shown instead of "Paca(rana)".

We recommend all users update to this version at your convenience. If you work with the Kyma Timeline and need to use MTC to sync to your sequencer you should update before you next need to use MTC.

We have sent an email with the updated installer to existing customers. If we somehow missed you please contact us at support@delora.com and we will send you the update promptly.

Hi Doug,

Are there any plans (even very distant ones) for a Windows release? I would love to control my Capybara via KymaControl via KymaConnect but I am on XP, at the moment.

Thanks!

We have no current plans to port our Kyma products to Windows. The primary reason is that we have limited resources so we have chosen to focus our efforts.

However even if we did support Windows that would not help your situation. SSC KymaControl requires the full Paca(rana) OSC facilities. KymaConnect provides a network bridge so that Kyma OSC can pass freely between two different networks (and numerous other features). It only provides a small set of OSC commands to a Capabara.

Perhaps you were thinking of our CapyLink product (or the version included in KymaConnect)? CapyLink provides Capybara's with the "MIDI over OSC" subset of Kyma OSC. This is so that compatible controllers, like our vKi and vKiP iPad apps can be used with Capybaras.

One possible solution for those using Windows for Kyma is to augment your set up with an inexpensive used Mac or MacMini. All of our Kyma OSX products use modest computing resources. Its possible to even KymaConnect running on the Mac while you still run Kyma on your Windows computer. Certainly not an ideal (or inexpensive) solution but it does bring the added benefit that some of the novel OSX music applications could then be incorporated into your workflow

Yes, you're right, I was confused and thinking of the CapyLink portion of KymaConnect. Also, your suggestion to pick up a secondhand Mac is a good one and something I've been contemplating for this purpose. Also, I didn't realize I'd be able to run KymaConnect on the Mac while running Kyma on Windows!

Thanks for clarifying!

All of our OSX Kyma applications can be run on a different computer than the one that is used to run the Kyma application. This opens up some interesting possibilities for multi-computing set ups.

There are a couple of compromises though when you run KymaConnect in this fashion. One of KymaConnect's functions is that it creates an CoreMIDI compatible MIDI port that sequencers and other music applications can use to send and receive MIDI to the Paca(rana). That port of course is only available to software running on the same computer as KymaConnect. However even for that there is a useful workaround now: network MIDI. OSX has had network MIDI for quite a number of years now. Recently though an independent developer created "rtpMIDI" for Windows that allows OSX and Windows systems to send and receive MIDI over the network. This also allows iOS devices that support its built-in network MIDI to work with Windows systems (provided rtpMIDI is running on the Windows computer).

The second facility you sacrifice when you run KymaConnect on a different system is that its "DSP Control" OSC extensions will not function. These extensions allow an OSC client to start, stop, or pause Kyma's DSP processing and will only work if KymaConnect runs on the same computer as the Kyma application.
