Hi all,

I am wondering if any of you have ever made a sound which converts a mono or multi-channel sound source into a 2-channel file that would simulate the localization properties of a binaural recording.

Meaning that the resulting output would sound more or less mono when played back on speakers, but would have surround localization when listened to on headphones.

I know Tom Erbe's sound hack has a funtion to convert a mono input to a binaural output, but I haven't seen an example of how this would be done in Kyma.

I've looked at Dave's super-duper stereoizer but it doesn't seem to directly address this function.

Any thoughts?

So, maybe it can't be done? Real-time HRTF in Kyma?

I think the head related transfer functions are usually implemented as FIR filters. So the thread on FIR filters started by Cristian might be relevant here.

Also, you HAVE to check out David's HRTF functions over at the Twiki

His UltimateStereo is the best stereo field enhancing filter I've ever heard... Beats the Soundhack one by miles...

I've checked out Dave's sound, but I don't think it directly addresses binaural localization. Am I misunderstanding something?

well , maybe you can't place sound in a field - but his SRS enconder is awesome.

In the SRS sound he has two FIR filters with the proper coeffecients for HRTF filtering. You can build from these and maybe try and build a panner that will pan using HRTF filtering. As I don't know anything at all about the subject , apart from that I have a head and two ears, then I can't help you further, but I'm sure it would be great fun experimenting - you might just stumble across something really interesting.
