Will anyone be going to KISS 2014 who could help me set up Kyma with my Eigenharp Pico?

Looking forward to seeing you all there!!

Best

Sounds like a great project for the Kyma Open Lab (happening in parallel with the Collaboratory rehearsals in the afternoons). What kind of output controls can the Pico generate? MIDI? OSC?

Well it is very proprietary ( but now open source I think) , it can output midi 14bit but I am not sure how as I am new and it is a bit complicated. A chap called Mark Harris is updating the software but he uses git hub and I am not to familiar with that either. I will persist, and do some midi tests before I bring it to KISS.

Yes it will be a great opportunity to try it all out. Does anyone else have a Pico and use it with Kyma?

I spoke with Mark Harris Today (very helpful) It does indeed output midi and interestingly can kind of disguise itself as a soundplane! However he said this when I asked him would it 'just work'

14 bit midi - 14 bit is provided as standard in the eigend midi matrix, just click the box. ( also hi res velocity is also supported), so no additional software needed. you will also want to be using omni ( = voice per midi channel mode)
( this video was about midi input, which is not in eigend, but your after midi output which is well supported)

[As Soundplane]

'native support' , this is interesting, actually the soundplane spits out osc for kyma ( its unclear, if kyma was altered, or the soundplane driver just was extended to conform to an pre-existing kyma osc protocol)
anyway, whats interesting is my soundplane agent, (plg_soundplane) contains all the soundplane kyma code, so this could easily be 'activated'.
( my code is in my open source repository)
but... i dont have access to a kyma system, so unfortunately i cant help to test, or sort out any oddities (which are likely!) and bewarned taking on agent development is a bit challenging

the osc route i think is much more interesting than using midi with kyma, for a few reasons, less conversions, more efficient and also not having to conform to the midi model, especially regarding velocities and envelopes.

--------------

Would you be interested in talking with Mark to get something implemented. I know it is not priority and I have no idea how big a job it is. Anyway if you are interested I will contact him. Hopefully it might be a quick win!

oh I missed this out

"... just see pico as a soundplane"
to be honest id need to check the code, but i think the answer is no
usually the soundplane osc protocol is 't3d' but the code base has a kyma mode (from what i remember) , and i think it sends out something a bit different then ( or at least a modified form of t3d).
all that code is in my agent.
but i dont expose any way to 'turn it on', as i had no way to test it ( and i dont release untested code )
to get it to work, the code would need to be reviewed, to see what exactly it does with kyma, and then provide a flag on the agent to tell it, its connected to kyma rather than t3d ( for aalto/kaivo)

Some more info From Mark!

some links for my soundplane agent: http://youtu.be/wyX1HFCYHfs?list=UUlqVAKKbtvJMDkvJ5ym_e1w

Ive just checked the code, there is a flag that needs to be set, to turn on kyma, and then it sends slightly different messages.
would be easy enough to enable, but I've no idea how i could test it was working.

Hi Simon,

First step might be to give it a try and see what happens in OSC (in the SoundPlane's Kyma mode). We worked with Madrona Labs to get the SoundPlane working with Kyma.

The SoundPlane uses the Kyma OSC Protocol (feel free to share this link with Mark if he would like to help you get it going):

Let us know what happens!

Hi Simon,

It looked like you had some success at the Open Lab using OSCulator and the Sound Plane emulation mode. Were you going to ask Mark something about the port number? Is it safe to say it's fully working now? Eager to see that first video of you performing the Pico with Kyma!
