Hi all. I am currently mixing an indie film with a ton of audio problems(go figure). There is a particular scene that has posed a real challenge, I think. In one scene where one of the actors' lines needed to be replaced - but the charachter was eating and talking with his mouth full of food. And yes, the director did not have the actor eating anything when he did the ADR session. So what you have is an actor saying his lines with a mouthful of food, but his words are perfectly anunciated. Any thoughts or ideas on possibly fixing this in kyma? (and no, the actor cannot do another adr session)

Eating.kym

Hi concentrix
It seems that that when eating we find it quite easy to say our "S"es and "T"s etc. but our vouwls get mucked up. I've attached a module that converts a voice into seperate harmonics and then back to sound, but there are two controls that are used to remove someof the harmonics in the middle. Any harmonics above the lotrack control and below the hi track control are removed. By making minnor adjustments to these, you can hear different vouwl sounds, but there is not one setting that works well for the whole sample. By putting this module into a timeline you can automate these controls to match the speech. By making the lotrack higher than the hitrack you get the whole sound back so the "T"s and "S"es can have the full spectrum. Also varying the controls over time stops it sounding like a notch filter.
hope it helps

I couldn't open the file...I got an error message saying "Unhandled Exception Key not found 16343."

Is there something I need to do to the file before I can open it?

Sorry if that's a stupid question

I tried downloading it myself and it seems ok here. I wonder if you have the latest vre of kyma (5.06). It will tell you in the prefs menu. I assume your getting the message when you are trying to open it in kyma. Are you using a Mac or PC and which browser are you using ?

I upgraded to 5.06 - still get the same error message. I am using win95 with Netscape 4.7. Right clicking on the link and selecting save link as...then typing the .kym extention on the end of the filename. hmm...

hay guess what "image hmm.gif" is what I get if I just drag the icon to the desk top. This is just a copy of the icon itself. You shouldn't need to type in the kym extension as I've already called it "eating.kym".
I'm using a Mac and netscape 4.7 and I do use the "save this link as" option and it appears as "eating.kym". Maybe there is another way to make netscape down load the file not the icon. Maybe there's something in the prefs. I think just playing with all the options until you get the right file name. I wish I knew more about PCs and netscape.
If you do find the solution I'd love to know.
thanks

Thanks a lot pete. I got it to work. Your example was great. However, my capy doesn't have enough DSP power to make it sound any better than a telephone really. Plus the director is real picky and probably wouldn't like it anyway. But man...Thanks a million!

You have my sympathies
I have also suffered at the hands of directors who plainly don't have a *** clue about the difficulties of post production - what a prat!

I think itīs very difficult to create voice-fx that donīt show technical sounding artifacts. Iīm working on a film with a direcdtor who wants a very "natural" sounding morph from a female voice to her own ghost. Kyma can create nice fx but itīs very hard to prevent them from sounding like a Eventide alien.
A good morph would sound like a cross-fade between two people talking in sync.

Not to change the subject too much, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced working with a director that - when you call him to ask a simple yes/no question - he takes about 45 minutes to an hour explaining the yes or no answer...while you could have been working on his film. Sheesh
Anyway, I am still interested if anyone else has any ideas on how to fix my eating ADR problem.

What is he eating, btw? Something crispy and crunchy or something low pass like bread and potatoes? Or maybe you could just add in some sounds of yourself slurping and munching and use the inverse of an amplitude follower to bring in your lip smacks and gulps whenever the actor pauses for a breath?

He's eating fried chicken. I put in some eating sfx inbetween words/lines and it seems to work ok. It still looks horrible. I tried several things in kyma with eating sfx and the actors lines...I can get it close, but the quality of the output just isn't good enough for the scene. I just need to demand that the director get the actor in again. Thanks everyone for your help.
