After a frustrating couple of days with my Capy's MIDI dropping out, I checked around to see if there were any used firewire interfaces locally. Yep, a Presonus Firebox. Seeing that it was on the list of supported devices, I plumped for it in the hopes that it could at least tide me over until my Capy problems might be resolved.

Unfortunately, I am no better off. My Mac (OS X 10.8.4) sees it, though no drivers were installed and as far as I can find, there is nothing to remove. The Pacarana sees it, too, but every time I try to use it, it begins popping, dropping out and repeatedly searching for interfaces and ditching its connection to the computer - Kyma froze at one point and I had to force quit.

Check your Mac's Audio MIDI Setup. Ensure that the Mac is not using the FIreBox for any audio I/O, including alert sounds.

For initial testing purposes, please set up a system with Mac, Pacarana, FireBox only (no other devices on the bus). Once you get that stablized, you can add the other devices back in.

The Firebox has not been selected for use for input/output/internal sounds. That has been the MOTU 828MkII.

Okay, I currently have only the Pacarana, Firebox and Mac on the firewire bus.. . When I start Kyma, I get some crackles and pops, but it eventually starts, says "Kyma" (as it has all along). However, once I fire up a sound and try playing it with the Fake Keyboard (my MIDI controller is routed through the MOTU which is now disconnected), it plays okay, then drops out, comes back in, drops back out. Though so far, the Pacarana hasn't said it was looking for an interface or host computer and the Firebox LED has stayed blue. When the MOTU was online, the Firebox LED was going red and the Pacarana was looking for interface/computer. So an improvement, but not there yet (and I'll be needin' that MOTU).

I take it back. Just as I was about to send this reply, the LED went red and the Pacarana said it was looking for interfaces/host computer disconnected/connected.

Is there a warning in the Memory status window that the Sound is too complex to run in real time?

No, there are no warnings in the memory status window. And memory use is minimal. The Sounds I've tried are sounds I've worked with quite a lot, so I know they aren't too complex. I do, however, get some "out of realtime" messages in the DSP status window when it flakes out. It doesn't seem to matter what Sound it is. I just had it happen on the old P5 Sound from the Wiki. However, even before a Sound is loaded, there is an unusual number of clicks and pops.

As a matter of fact, the Pacarana is giving me those "searching for audio interfaces" and "host computer" messages and the Firebox's LED is going red even with no sound loaded (I initialized the DSP a few minutes ago).

Dang... it's only getting worse. I walked away for a while (Kyma still running, but Pacarana initialized) and when i came back into the studio and tried to load a Sound, I get an alternating spinning beachball and watch and a repeated message to "turn on my Kyma processor". Finally it told me "cannot determine processor". I get nothing but a busy bee from the Pacarana, even if I try to initialize the DSP from Kyma. It no longer sees it. I can't close out Kyma now. I'll have to force quit.

Can this be because the Mac is trying to take over the Presonus? Even without drivers installed (it sees the Presonus and it works as an audio interface with a Mac DAW - haven't tried MIDI.

Please start up with the caps lock key down and start without Preferences. See if this makes a difference.

I had problems with my Firewire Kyma and Audio setup once. By reading the logs and checking the system console of Mac OS X(/Applications/Utilities/Console) it turned out that is was a problem of Mac OS X itself.
Mac OS X send a "Firewire Bus Reset" once in a while...

The problem was fixed by updating to the latest Mac OS updates... and updating to the latest Adobe Flash after that. Then rebooting and repairing the Disk Permissions with the Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility after that.

Disk Utility showed various "errors" regarding Java and Adobe Flash which will be fixed.

After the repair everything worked fine as it was supposed to be...
All the random firewire bus resets where gone...

my 5 cent
best
Chris

p.s.: remember to make Backups before doing things like that!

Thanks Christian. SSC are working diligently to track down the culprits. I have no doubt that it'll be worked out soon.

PreSonus released information about product compatibility. It looks like the Firebox is a discontinued product which makes it incompatible with 10.8. Here's the link: www.presonus.com/news/press_releases/Mac-OS-X-108-Mountain-Lion-Compatibility-Statement This may or not be part of the problem, but a friend of mine has not been able to get his Firebox to work properly on 10.8.4 either. I hope you're issue gets resolved quickly. Good luck.

Thanks. It actually works fine as a MIDI and audio interface with 10.8.4 on my system, though I didn't install any of the software. I only tried it after discovering it wasn't working with Kyma. However, Cubase recognizes it, as does energyXT2.5 (the only things I tried it with). In my case, it even seems to work as a Pacarana interface so long as I don't have my MOTU 828MkII on the bus. As soon as they are chained together, it goes bonkers.
