Author | Topic: Delora's vM2 software integrates Lemur and VCS |
Douglas Kraul Member |
![]() ![]() ![]() Harmony Systems, Inc. is proud to announce the availability of vM2. vM2 is an OSX application that transforms the Lemur touch controller into a MotorMix compatible control surface. Kyma users will appreciate the excellent degree of VCS compatibility that vM2 affords the Lemur. vM2 provides essential MotorMix compatibility elements that the Lemur lacks. The included Kyma-specific template takes advantage of unique vM2 facilities to deliver VCS integration that in some ways exceeds the MotorMix. vM2 includes the application software, a "generic" MotorMix Lemur template, the Kyma template, and a detailed user manual. A single user license is $29.95 USD, or 24,95 euro. It can be purchased via credit card at www.delora.com. A fully functioning time-limited demo is available by request.

![]() ![]() ![]() Have to say that this is a fantastic patch and very professionally done. If you already have a Lemur it's pretty much a no brainer that you will want this. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Looks interesting.... Does this mean that if I move a fader on the VCS then it will be replicated on the virtual MotorMix, and conversely, if I move a fader on the vM2 then that will show on the VCS? Also, can the vM2 show the VCS fader names (like on the MM) and also an accurate numeric value for each fader (also like on the MM). Finally, one of the annoying things about the MM is that if you have a Sound that uses, say, 9 Faders, then it requires more than one MM page to view them all. Might the vM2 have the capability to re-scale to incorporate all 9 Faders in one viewable page (to follow this example through?) Any feedback appreciated... Thanks. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Q. Does this mean that if I move a fader on the VCS then it will be replicated on the virtual MotorMix, and conversely, if I move a fader on the vM2 then that will show on the VCS? A. Yes. Same with VCS switches. Their status is shown on the Lemur display as "LEDs". Q. Also, can the vM2 show the VCS fader names (like on the MM) and also an accurate numeric value for each fader (also like on the MM). A. vM2 creates a Motor Mix compatible display that is shown on the Lemur. Whatever Kyma writes to the Motor Mix display it shows on this display. Normally this is a short four character version of the parameter name for the currently active bank of faders and rotaries. However when you press one of the eight "select" buttons Kyma shows the full parameter name and the detailed value for the corresponding control. Q. Finally, one of the annoying things about the MM is that if you have a Sound that uses, say, 9 Faders, then it requires more than one MM page to view them all. Might the vM2 have the capability to re-scale to incorporate all 9 Faders in one viewable page (to follow this example through?) A. Not currently. When Kyma is configured to use the Motor Mix it explicitly uses Motor Mix bank management facilities to afford more than eight faders and eight rotaries. Likewise the information for each of those controls shown on the Motor Mix LCD assumes this kind of controller banking. It is technically possible for vM2 to support additional faders or rotaries by playing some tricks with the way banks changes are communicated to Kyma (we already do something similar to with the volume and preset selector knob in the Kyma-specific Lemur template) but doing so would also require somehow duplicating the 'LCD" display and properly managing an additional virtual copy of the display for every eight additional control sets. And of course these would somehow have to fit in the limited Lemur control surface area. Even if all of this were accomplished you might then run into some issues with moving multiple faders at once. Its not clear how a Motor Mix compatible application like Kyma's VCS would react to such rapid changes in the banks. However there are other possibilities. vM2 has two distinct components. Its heart (or engine if you will) is the OSX user agent program that runs silently in the background. This handles all of the Motor Mix "protocol" complexity and converts nearly every Motor Mix MIDI action between Kyma and vM2 into an appropriate OSC command that is sent to the Lemur. How these Kyma-generated Motor Mix commands are presented to the user, and what the results of user actions on the Lemur are in terms of commands sent to Kyma, are largely controlled by the second component, the *active* Lemur template. This opens up some interesting opportunities. A different Lemur UI can be substituted, including control placement, *control type* (provided it is able to handle the OSC requirements), and even the number of controls. This is how we did the Kyma-specific Lemur template. A generic Motor Mix panel is designed to work with a broad range of applications so the labels on switches and such do not convey much meaning when used for something like the VCS. So the user has to memorize the mapping between the Motor Mix legend and the actual use. Likewise the placement of these switches and other elements are not always in line with the way the VCS uses them. Finally the VCS does not even use many of the Motor Mix command switches so they are just cluttering the UI. Since vM2 "virtualizes" the Motor Mix control surface it is possible to tailor the Lemur UI *through a template* to some better suited for the application. Also vM2's does not in any way preclude adding additional controls that either use the Lemur's native MIDI facilities, or something like the excellent OSCulator to translate OSC messages into Kyma global controllers. So you can "mix and match" to create a composite, customized UI that includes VCS compatible elements via vM2, and other control elements using MIDI or OSCulator. Doug IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Just wanted to briefly announce that we have released vM2 version 2.0.1. The main improvements are that the MTC issues has been fixed, and vM2 now supports multiple Paca(rana)s (for those so fortunate). If vM2 finds more than one Paca(rana) on the network it gives you the option to connect to a specific one, or you can do nothing and it will choose one for you. There are other minor improvements. For more details see http://www.delora.com/delora_products/vm2/vm2.html. This is a free update for existing vM2 customers. If you are a customer you should have already received the update via the email you used when you purchased vM2. If you did not receive the update email please contact us, support@delora.com. Thank you, Doug Douglas Kraul [This message has been edited by Douglas Kraul (edited 15 April 2010).] [This message has been edited by Douglas Kraul (edited 15 April 2010).] IP: Logged |
