Hi all,

I have dedicated some time to put on paper the little I know about Kyma by creating some mindmaps.

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea.

Mind maps are not intended to be used as reference text or substitutes for other organized learning means but rather as an alternative way of organizing knowledge and assist to its retention.

I hope that this documents help those facing Kyma’s steep learning curve.

If you have any suggestions on how to improve this document, I will gladly implement them.

–> UPDATE 20.FEB.2012
New mindmaps included in v.05:
-Expressions Library
-Overviews of Smalltalk messages and Capytalk Reference

You may download the mindmaps in pdf format here:

Pere

Beautiful work!

May we add a link to your maps to the tweaky Learn? You've presented a new way to explore Kyma (using a map!

I wonder whether "Keyboard controlled" might be a central keyword for some people? Or whether it might make sense to include some of the new morphing prototypes in the Additive Synthesis map?

Some Sounds could conceivably be linked in more than one map (for example SelectableOutput is on your Selectable map, and it could also be on the Outputs map). Does the mind map protocol allow for multiple links (like a real mind ?

Of course. I'll be glad to share this info and my intention is to finish the mindmap so that all the concepts related to Kyma programming have their own trees: Smalltalk/Capytalk, the included tools... etc. Mindmaping the expressions library, perhaps?

If you look with detail, you will find that central keywords have been chosen not from the index in the final pages of the Prototype Reference (where some Sounds appear obviously in more than one Category) but from the Category they are given in the first lines of the Prototype description. I thought it would make more sense to stick to that one Category for a start and maybe later some keywords could be split/merged. This conclusion was also part of the learning process!

The real tool for this crossed multiple links would be a concept map. A very similar tool that is more faithful to reality but also adds another layer of difficulty for beginners in a subject.

Maybe in the future I will find the perfect tool for laying out knowledge. I would also love to include the Sound icons in this mind map because they are really useful and memorable, specially the icon shapes thing.

PKM (Personal Knowledge Management) can be done in a few different ways. I find it perfect for documenting complex tasks or subjects... but it takes time

Great

If it is ok with the wiki procedures, I have changed the link to the page where the mind map can be downloaded, instead of to the pdf file directly. This way, I will be able to post updates to the file without having to change the wiki entry and the wiki link will always point to the newest version of the file and its comments.

Regards to all and thanks for your feedback. More to follow!

This is fantastic. Thank-you so much for your hard work. The little ideas along the way make a great addition. With your permission, I would love to include this in lectures. (with credit obviously).

Great stuff.

I would be more than happy to attend to any of your lectures

It is an ongoing project. Now I'm "mapping" the expressions library and it is absolutely revealing to browse with detail through the elegant bits of code included in them...

Smalltalk/Capytalk mindmaps will also follow.

The titanic efforts certainly show up later when the inspiration "strikes"

He, he... My copy is also on the iPad and it is also an "inspirational" tool.

I have used SimpleMind. At this moment the program really needs to improve a lot, but it makes the nicest looking mindmaps...

I would really like to place the Sound icons in the mindmaps and I have told that they will allow that in a future update.
