I am using Kyma 5.18 under Mac OS 9.2.1 on a G4 DP 533, and am having problems with presets.

Exhibit A: the Preset sound just doesn't work for me. I hacve tried several of the tutorials, and the one off of the Prototypes strip, and it just has no effect. No matter how many times I snapshot the currect VCS values, the next time I play the sound, the sliders are set to default values that have nothing to do with the snapshot values, whether or not I have moved the sliders since the snapshot.

Exhibit B: maybe related, I noticed today that when I select and play the demo/tutorial sounds, the first time I play them, the VCS is initialized with some reasonable presets, appropriate to the sound. However, if I play again (not replay, just space bar, play it again from the Sound Browser), the VCS controllers are set to some default values, usually 1 or .5, without regard to anything about the sound, and the result is often shreiking cacaphony (not that I am opposed to shreiking or cacaphony, but this is not the intended result).

Exhibit C: probably unrelated, when I select a preset (say Default) on the VCS, then tweak the sliders, I cannot restore them by choosing that preset name (the now-italicized Default) again. I have to create or choose another preset, and then go back and select the one I wanted.

The PresetSound is officially obsolete. Please delete the PresetSound from the end of the chain and use the VCS to snapshot your presets. These will be saved with the Sound.

This is fixed in the upcoming release. For the time being, please use the workaround you have already discovered of switching to another preset and then back again. Thanks.

Ahh, that explains it. Is there a list somewhere of the stuff in the tutorials that is no longer available or that has been deprecated or obsoleted? That would be helpful (but, I suppose, a lot of work).

So what governs the initial state of the sliders and buttons in the VCS? If I snapshot some parameter setting and call them "Default," will they in fact be the default, and will the controllers take those as initial values every time I play the sound? Or will it only work the first time, like the demos and tutorials (which, it appears, use the deprecated Preset sound to store those values)?

I.e. if I do as you say, will things work like I expect them to?

The Sound initially comes up using the last preset you had selected before saving the Sound. (and yes, Kelly, you should always do as I say and everything will work as you expect! ;-)
