The photos from KISS 2011 were inspiration enough to try out some sonification of Sun Spot Data - as you do on a Sunday!

The sonification of the sun spot observation data was created by parsing the data using Quartz Composer (which also provides the visual feedback). The data was also streamed into Kyma and mapped onto audio parameters.

(The data is driven in two ways: Manually with the mouse, so that the X-Mouse position is picked up and is used to index through the data ad hoc or via a Sawtooth LFO which cycles through data sequentially at a rate of 'cycle'.)

Interesting the way there was a relatively quiet period in the early 1800s. Is there a 5 year cycle?

(Your Apple stock sonification was cited during the symposium, btw

Have just looked on wikipedia and the quiet period in the early 1800s is referred to as the Dalton Minimum.

The 11 year solar magnetic cycle can definitely be heard, especially around 1:10 into the video.

Nice to know about the citation!! [and to virtually have been there at the symposium] ;-)

Are you guys familiar with French composer Gerard Grisey? Sorry if this is off topic but I saw this post and it made me think of his piece Le Noir de l'Etoile, for six percussionists and transmission of astrological signals.

There are clips on Youtube but the sound quality is not good, I have the recording and it's absolutely incredible (it's really necessary to hear the original recording for the detail/impact).

Hope this is of interest!
