hey guys,

what do you think of the idea of translating dsp algorhytms on fpga-architecture procs ? We all know they are mighty big on parallel computing, should be awesome for sound, shouldnt it ? Like the latest graphics cards, which have taken up all the physics tasks, are fpga, and they handle the job quite well for now...

i know a guy or two from the electrotechnics university who could get a couple of testbeds where we could fool around on the fpgas, but Im asking you, dsp veterans if it is even worth it ? Idea sounds cool and fresh to me, but thats about it at the time

what are your thoughts?

Andrew

A lot of digital mixers are implemented with FPGAs. So for relatively fixed architectures it might be worth exploring.

interesting... how come mixers though ? Wouldnt sheer parallel power be a good engine for something sturdier ? Like convolution, or realtime spectral analysis to morph )

Hiya,
funny you should mention this, I am currently reading through the mailing list here: http://www.fpga.synth.net/

seems to be where most of the folks doing interesting fpga audio stuff are... let me know if you come across anything interesting
