HI all,

a few questions about spatialisation.

I am running about 8 instruments - some mono, some stereo. I want to be able to pan them independantly through any of the 4 outputs (and inbetween) - I need to be able to pan them independantly, and remotely using Continuous Controllers. I have looked at various prototypes, including the 'MonoToPolar4' which looked promising, but I couldn't see how to use one of these on the end of each algorithm and make sure that the ouputs don't clip.

It seems to me a timeline might be one approach, but I don't need the temprol control of the timeline as this is an interactive installation, and I am just about out of processing powere so I am concerned about the overhead of the timeline.

Esentiually I want the sound to follow a person around the space. Each sound is allocated to a different level of activity - as the threshold increases, a new instrument is played - so the instruments must move to the field of greatest activity on their threshold.

I am controlling other parameters from MAX, so have MIDI i/o happening already.

Any advice would be welcome.

A Timeline with a WaitUntil (to remove the temporal aspect) really is the most straightforward way to approach this. Otherwise, you could use a Matrix8, but you would have to compute how much of each input should be present in each of the 8 outputs. The Timeline is more direct because you can tell it "where" the sound is in polar coordinates without having to compute how much of the sound should be present in each speaker in order to create that illusion.

Can I use a Timeline and still be able to unplug the Computer and leave the Capy running?

To use the Polar Coordinates in the timeline, Do I kust allocated a controller to that variable in the control line? How then do I know where the sound is in terms of the 4 outputs? ie. 0 = out 1, 1-63 between 1 and 2, 64=output 2, 65-95 between 2 and 3, 96=output 3, 97-126 between outputs 3 and 4, and 127=output4???

Is there a patch in the examples that isslustrates this? I am running short of time

Select a Sound in the track you want to control, select the Angle parameter from the track parameters list, set it to live, and then choose the MIDI channel and controller.

The range should be automatically set up to be -0.5 to 1.5, which corresponds to directly behind the listener, around towards the front clockwise, and ends up in the back at the end. (MIDI controller value 0 corresponds to -0.5, which is in the back, value 63 corresponds to 0.5 which is directly in the front, etc.) There is some information about this in the Kyma.5 Walkthrough found in Documentation under the File menu in Kyma.

Thanks, I have had a look at this today, and I think the timeline is definately the way to go. I have 2 questions though:

1. If I change the angle reasonable quickly, which I think I shall want to do in this installation I hear Zipper noise - can I get rid of this?

2. I did not want to leave my powerbook attached to the Capybara for the duration of the exhibition, but realised when working with the timeline today that the sound stops when you leave the timeline, even if using a WaitUntil to just hold all algorithms running and access the spatialisation commands. Is there any way around this? Could you provide a WaitUntilAndPlayOnQuit type object that allows the same functionallity you have provided for removing the computer from the Capybara when not using the timeline??

Check out the option in the Miscellaneous Preferences and see if it can let you quit Kyma without killing the Capybara. The other approach is to disconnect the Capybara cable once you have the timeline started.

OK, I'll try that. I have the preference set to not stop sound when quiting Kyma, but that still stops the sound when running a time line. I will try running the time line and then unpluging the cable to the Capy while the timeline is running.

Can you GUARANTEE this will not damage Kyma or the Capy? I realy can't afford corrupted software or damaged hardware this close to an exhibition.

We unplug ours all of the time without any problems...
