The new spatialization functions in Kyma X.47 brings up a question: what are people using for their surround and spatialization speaker configurations? It would be interesting to hear a range of setups from the minimum workable configuration to the top of the line studio monitoring setup.

I'm using a fairly modest arrangement of Paradigm Atoms (consumer surround speakers) with an old Sony STR-DE 525 amplifier (having 6 discrete audio inputs). Channels 7 & 8 are on a Bryston amp powering a pair of Tannoy speakers (this was my old stereo setup before I got the Paradigm surround speakers). When I got these 5 years ago, the 6 Paradigms plus the Sony amp came to less than $1000. But I would imagine there are several, less costly solutions available today. (As well as several high end solutions like Dynaudios or Genelec).

What advice do you have for those who do not yet have surround setups (or who are looking to upgrade their setups)?

Well I have also a "darwinian" surround system, created by evolution
I think important to have full range speakers, I don't like little speaker-satellites. I have KRK V8 (active speakers) for main L-R. KRK also for Rears and Central, amplified by Yamaha RX-V640RDS and a Yamaha subwoofer. I have created a surround test file to align all the speakers in volume and frequency with external equalizers.
This is not an ideal surround system, many of my work is in stereo or quad, so for now I'm happy. I use Kyma to do quad, and I translate it to surround in Logic, but after this release I'm thinking to do surround directly from Kyma. Now I'm thinking how to integrate it in my system, that's the complex part, because I love to work in real time.
My ideal surround system it would be with active speakers connected to (at least) a 16 channel surround mixer. The surround mixer is necessary to monitor the DAW and analog Kyma surround outputs at the same time. Also the DAW would need to have eight digital inputs to do direct recordings from Kyma, this is very important for automation and "on-line" sound manipulations. I prefer two computers: DAW and Kyma.
Ooops! very expensive to me !!

I have the minimum necessary for a multi-channel setup - 4 full range Tannoy Reveal Active nearfields.

Like jesges, I don't like limited-range speakers and subs. That concept is based on the idea that bass frequencies are non-directional, which I think simply isn't true, as anyone here can attest, I suspect. Bass frequencies may be less directional than high frequencies, but they clearly aren't non-directional.
