Hi,

I know this is covered starting on page 71 in Kyma X Revealed, but I'm having trouble figuring this out...

I'm trying to put a timeline together which is basically a series of fairly large and complex sounds, one after another, with WaitUntils allowing me to control when the timeline moves to the next one. I have put the sounds all on the same track in the timeline.

My midi controller is set up to output various controllers on different channels (and I don't want to have to reprogram it), so I don't want to set up track one to only receive midi on channel one, for example. I want it to receive on all channels.

I've tried playing sounds that have various controllers on various channels, and the track on the timeline seems to respond to some and not to others, even controllers on different channels, but I can't figure out why it receives some and not others (I've confirmed that Kyma is seeing the controllers, under Configure Midi...).

I then tried to go to the controller editor in the timeline and assign the controllers there (Selecting "LIVE" and then clicking on the control source and choosing the channel and controller). But when I play the timeline again, I get no response to those controllers.

I'm sure this is user error, based on an incomplete understanding of basic timeline functions, but what am I doing wrong? Do I need to override something so that the track can see all channels?

thanks,
Phil

I wonder if maybe the Sounds themselves had controller mappings from when you were using them indepedently of the Timeline and that is the source of the conflict. One way to check this would be to start with a fresh Timeline, drag your Sounds into it, play the Timeline; then edit the top layer VCS of the Timeline to map the individual controllers to the channels and controller numbers you want.

Yes, this seems to be the problem I was having. I had assumed that assigning controllers in the controller editor would override the assignments I had made previously in the VCS.

What I want to be able to do is have the same controller controlling different hot values at different times in the timeline, but it seems that I can't assign a controller to more than one hot value. So if I want one of my physical faders controlling a parameter in the first sound I play, the parameter in the second sound that I want to be controlled by that fader has to have the same name - If I give them separate names and assign them to the same midi controller, the 2nd one doesn't even seem to show up in the VCS.

So it looks like I have to go through my sounds and change hot parameter names to generic names like "fader1," since one fader's function in one sound might be completely different in the next. However, I can thankfully give the fader different labels in the different layouts for the sound (each sound has so many faders that I need to change to the various sub-layouts as I move from sound to sound - the top level is just too crowded).

The other problem with this is that my new "fader1" has a single fixed range - I can't have different ranges in different sounds, so I have to scale all my hot parameters internally to 0-1 (something I mostly do anyway - but sometimes I like to use increments in faders, and that's more work to do in code, and now won't be reflected in incremental movemnts visually in the VCS).

Maybe what I'm wishing for is the ability to assign the same controller to multiple hot values? Would this solve these issues?

thanks,
Phil

hi phil

do any of your continuous controllers show up when you use the dsp ->configure midi -> show messages function?

Since installing x.35 kyma does not see those controller numbers from my external synth, i didn't notice if this was behaviour was happening before as i hadn't been using that controller. my midi interface definitley registers midi activity and kyma receives the note on/off messages but not the cc messages or pb etc. definitely there is not a hardware problem as other devices are responding correctly when it is routed to them. even a direct midi patch to the capy makes no difference.

i notice your sorted your problem but has anyone else had any midi mapping irregularities when using a motormix and an second controller that they have not been able to solve

I get periodic problems receiving midi, which can be fixed by reinitializing DSP. But in general I see the messages via Configure Midi.

But I have an unusual midi setup - I route my midi from usb controllers into the computer and a Max patch, and then Max sends them out my midi interface, which is hooked up to the capy midi in. Before I did that, I had problems using a midi merger to merge controllers from multiple controllers into the capy.

thanks for that reply

i tried isolating the instrument in the software midi router, without the motormix and that has no bearing - as i expected because i had hard patched the synth into the capy to test but i found out the midi cc messages are getting filtered but only on channel one! if i switch the synth to channel 2 kyma responds as expected.

so, why? ...if the motormix is selected in the preferences does that mean kyma ignores all cc events from other controllers on that channel? or perhaps has something gotten corrupted when i updated ....

thanks

Yes, the MotorMix uses channel 1 to communicate so when you have MotorMix selected in the Preferences, controller values on channel 1 are reserved for the MotorMix. (To turn of MM selection, Edit>Preferences>Performance to select Other instead of the MotorMix)
