Hi, As mentioned I need to get hold of a basic pc for live use. Can you tell me waht the absolute minimum specs for a laptop are, (just to load Kyma - no editing). Gareth IP: Logged |

It should be a Pentium, 166 MHz or faster (the faster it is, the happier you will be), and 64 MB RAM. Also, it must have a slot for PC(MCIA) cards. If you have a particular one in mind, feel free to email us the specs and we can tell you for certain whether that one will run Kyma comfortably or not. IP: Logged |

I probably hold the dubious distinction of using the wimpiest Kyma host. I have an old Gateway Pentium 90 laptop with 48 MB of RAM running Win95. Surprisingly, it works quite well for my needs. Of course, some operations are slow (e.g., extensive screen updates) but Kyma is quite stable. I use the laptop nearly exclusively for Kyma work. Kyma is (mostly) the only thing running on the laptop. When I run something like CoolEdit on it, I REALLY notice how slow it is. I actually ran Kyma on the same machine with only 16 MB of RAM. Not recommended but it worked! Load time for Kyma 4.xx was about 3 minutes! I'll be replacing the P90 with a much peppier system in the near future, but for now, I prefer to buy other hardware (MIDI controllers, mixers, etc). To me, the ability to use such a lightweight Kyma host is a testament to the "hardware sound engine" approach. It's a real feature! I would not want to road an expensive host. And I'd rather put my money in the box handling the audio. IP: Logged |

Hi, There seem to be a lot of IBM Thinkpads and Compaq Armadas around, secondhand and within my price range. Since this is just for live work which is the toughest?
