Author | Topic: smooth surround panning in timelines

![]() ![]() ![]() I have been having good results using MIDI controller contours generated in MAX to control the angle parameter the MultichannelPan Sound, particularly because I am able to specify that the !Angle hotvalue be smoothed. However, the MultichannelPan Sound does not seem to be very comfortable when used in a Sound in a timeline. So, when using a Sound in a timeline I have mapped the MIDI controller contours to the Angle track control in the timeline as a Live control source. Without the smoothing, though, I am getting a fair amount of zipper noise as my sounds whirl around the soundfield. So my question is this: is there a way to achieve smoothing when applying a live control to the Angle track control in a timeline? Many thanks for any help you can offer. IP: Logged

![]() ![]() ![]() Hi Sam, Just to verify, are you using Kyma version X.54? There's been a change to the Timeline to accommodate multichannel Sounds and MultichannelPan should function the same in the Timeline as it does on its own. Thanks! IP: Logged

Yes, I moved up to X.54 last week, but I'm still having difficulties with MultichannelPan in a timeline. I've attached an example timeline (SurroundMallets.ktl) if you want to take a look. My speaker placement preset is Surround 5.1. I'm expecting that a controller sweep from 0-127 should result in movement of the sound from LS through LF, CF, RF, to RS. However, what I'm seeing on the outputs is a pan from outputs 1-3-5 to outputs 2-4-6. Also, this timeline is a major processor hog (and I've got a fully-loaded Capy). The maximum polyphony I can get from the timeline is 7 tones. However, outside of a timeline the mallet Sound can get polyphony up to 56. Thanks for your help! IP: Logged

![]() ![]() ![]() I should mention that I've noticed too that the artifacts most frequently occur when the sound is panning to or from the front center channel. (And I should also mention that I've confirmed that PAN interpolation is ON.) IP: Logged

I'm looking at your Timeline and was wondering whether the attached Sound might do the trick. The attached Sound uses a MIDIVoice with polyphony 10 and an independent pan control over each of the voices. This could be played standalone without the Timeline if it behaves in the way you expect. ![]() ![]() ![]() Yes, I think I'll be able to use this to get what I'm after. And, as an unexpected bonus, it suggests a solution to another problem I've been working on for a few weeks! Many thanks!! IP: Logged |
