I am now registered with flights booked!

Some questions:
1/ For the workshops will there be Kyma/Pacarana systems there that we can use and practice on or should we bring our own?
2/If we are to bring our own, what are people (uk) doing about insurance for their systems
3/ I am looking to stay at the Residencial César +. Does the price quoted include the Kiss2011 discount. How do you go about requesting it, using this link.

Web: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g189180-d669534-Reviews-Cesar_Residencial-Porto_Northern_Portugal.html

Very excited about meeting everyone, talking about space and learning more about Kyma!

Many thanks for your help.

Best

Hi Simon!

For the Thursday workshop we'll have 3 to 4 Kyma systems set up in the Casa da Musica Digitopia (http://digitopia-cdm.net/digitopia-en/) and you are welcome to use one of those! The format is that, in the morning, there will be an introduction/overview either in Digitopia or if there are too many people, in Sala de esaio 1. Then in the afternoon, everyone will get a chance to sit at one of the workstations and pose questions or show what they are working on. And whenever you are not sitting at a workstation you can see what other people are working on and offer help/answer their questions (and generate even more questions)!

Regarding the hotel, the best place to ask would be info.kiss2011@gmail.com. It may be that you have to email or call the hotel directly(?) Anyway, the people at info.kiss2011 will know.

Thanks and see you in Porto!

Many thanks for the info.

I will email the kiss2011 guys.

One last question. Will those machines be set up after the workshop to try things out? It would be a good chance to practice some new skills.
Looking forward to learning lots and meeting you all.

Best

Probably not, since, after Thursday afternoon, we'll be using the Pacaranas in the presentations and concerts. I'm sure there will still be the odd chance to ask questions or try things out on one of the setups during breaks. (Though, if it's anything like previous years, you'll probably be so busy meeting people and getting into discussions that you won't have much free time in any case

Dear Carla and SSC, is there any possibility that the videos of KISS will be recorded to be available later? KISS presentations themselves and discussions after, i.e. the very unique info.
I do not go to Portugal but nevertheless would like to watch and learn
I think just still photocamera in video mode on tripod is good enough and will not bother much...
Thanks in advance!

Just as in previous years (http://www.symbolicsound.com/Learn/KISS2010), we plan to record and post the talks & concerts.

I would urge you to not completely rule out the possibility of attending in person some year. As anyone who has been to KISS can tell you, there is nothing to compare with the experience of actually being there: the opportunity to meet & talk with other Kyma users gives you a real lift & you would be amazed how much you can learn by talking to colleagues over lunch or an espresso. In other words, the symposium is more than just the information in the lectures; it is the chance to ask your own questions, to interact with the developers, and it is the inspiration you get from realizing how many other people are working with the same language and the excitement of hearing what they are creating with Kyma. (As you can tell, it inspires us too!)

Jeff told us that he's decided to make a few last-minute updates to the book after seeing the What's new in Kyma talk at KISS in September. His book should be available toward the end of this year or early in 2012. We'll definitely let you know via the eighth nerve when it is available and where you can order a copy. Thanks for the interest!

In the discussion video @5:30, are there any example sounds where one is able to hot fade between spectral tracks?

[ @12:35 btw, I think there should not be any iMacs on the table at KISS 2012 to hide behind ;-) ]

Following Bruno Liberda's work in 'Navi-Gate', would it possible to define, for example four points on a spectrum as a region so that one could define a dynamic region that could be played 'live' (i.e. the points of the region could be controlled) instead of a static .spc file?

You could try using two SpectrumModifiers (or TrackSelectors), selecting different tracks, feeding two OscillatorBanks which go into a Crossfade module...

You'll see that we finally figured that one out by the Saturday Q&A session.

Perhaps you could use a Sample on FullRamp as a TimeIndex and control the Start and End of the loop live.

Thanks for your reply!

Of course, now I'm watching 'ExploringSoundSpace' and wondering about creating a 3D spectrum cube in n-space!! ;-)

The 'ExploringSoundSpace' video is excellent. Not only in its implied implications for our day to day work in audio but also in challenging and exploring thinking in our socio-economic space.

Thanks for posting the videos from kiss2011, lots of interesting stuff; too bad I couldn't attend, hopefully next year...

Is there any chance that the Sounds (or some of them) used in the presentations could be posted in the tweaky? It'd be great for exploring and learning.

Best

Davide

Thank you for making these videos available. I've been finding them both enjoyable and educational. Maybe someday I will also be able to attend in person.
