The sound designer is Ben Burtt, creator of the Star Wars saga sonic universe. Do a google query to learn about the dark side of the force...;-)

In the book 'Galactic Phrase Book & Travel Guide: Beeps, Bleats, Boskas, and Other Common Intergalactic Verbiage' there's a chapter 'Behind The Sounds' and Ben Burtt also mentioned Kyma about getting a 'talking-drain creature' voice!

I would love to work in sound design for film , but I don't know how to break into that world.. Guess I've been stuck in the music side of things for a little too long - I don't really know where to begin - I believe I have the talent and resources to work at a high level of sound design. I think I could deliver some quality and innovative work for the right kind of project, but just don't know the best way for someone like me to hook up with directors or studios.

Any tips on how to find a way into the shadowy world of sound-design and music for film?

This is pretty vague, but try to meet film directors / producers. Invite them over to hear some of your music. We (my partner and I) get asked to do film music from time to time, and it's always by directors or producers we have met previously. From what I've seen, they are quite eager to learn about music / sound that would work well with their films...

Also, maybe try to hook up with arrangers who already have that kind of work, and offer your services as a sound designer. They work under tremendous time pressure, so they might be happy to find a collaborator who could do some special work.
