Composer/performer Richard Lainhart (http://www.otownmedia.com) is organizing a New York-area Kyma user group and would like to get some feedback on how many Kyma users and other interested parties would be interested such a group. The user group would meet regularly in Manhattan to exchange ideas, listen to new Kyma music and works in progress, swap Sounds, ask questions, and generally confabulate with fellow sound-obsessed Kymaniacs in the NY area. A Kyma system and audio playback system would be available. Please respond here if you think you might be interested in attending meetings like this. And feel free to offer suggestions and ideas on what would make the meetings beneficial and interesting for you.

I would most definitely be interested, but I still consider myself a mere beginner, and would likely take more than I give, in the early stages, at least. If that's not off-putting, then feel free to contact me via my Web site: http://bc.somrec.com .

For now, I'm just trying to find out how many people are interested, so we can get an idea of the kind of space we'll need to find and if we'll need to limit attendance in any way, depending on the availability of a suitable space. I want the group to be open to all levels of users, and to anyone who's seriously interested in the Kyma. So all are welcome, at this point.

i'm up for it. i just moved out of the city, and live one hour north in westchester.. but i would do my best to be there.

i'm a few steps above a beginner.. so i too would probably take more than i would give, at the beginning.. but i'm anxious to learn more.

so, count me in.

i'd also be willing to consider hosting it in my studio if ever needed.. but, again, i'm an hour north of NYC.

Hi....

I would very much be interested in finding out more... I am still a KYMA "rookie" and I would love to get a handle on the machine!

I would also appreciate being updated on any plans for meetings in the NYC area.

I'd certainly be interested; my understanding of Kyma is still fundamental, but I'm willing to learn.

Count me in.

What spaces are you considering and what, if any, help might you need in terms of sound equipment and so forth?

I can't imagine we would need too much space, just ask the guys at symsound how many Kyma users even live in new york, it can't be that many.

I'm interested though realistically I'm not sure I'd find time - depends on the "when, where and what else is going on" stuff. I'd certainly like to be be notified if this happens.

I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of us would call ourselves beginners, so I will too. What else can you ever be when confronted with an infinitely expandable instrument?

Everyone who's interested should send me their email address (which some of you have done already), and I'll add you to the mailing list I'm compiling. (Your address will not be used for any other purpose.) Once I've collected a decent number of names, I'll contact my sources at NYU and see what kind of space will be available for the number of people who've expressed interest. Once that's settled, I'll contact the people on the list and we'll have the first meeting. I expect all this to happen in the next couple of months, with the first meeting perhaps in January.

My address is rlainhart@otownmedia.com.

Could you also post the meeting time and place here for people who may be reluctant to give out their email addresses? (This is a private forum, so I don't think you would be overwhelmed by drop-ins.)

I'll certainly post the info here too, but the point of getting addresses is to try to get an idea of the number of potential attendees, so we'll have an idea of the kind of space we'll need. In any case, I suspect the space for our initial meeting will be small, and we may have to limit the attendance to people who register in reply to an RSVP - I would hate to have to turn anyone away.

Maybe it won't be an issue, since the number of replies so far hasn't indicated that space will be a problem, but who knows?
