Small studio monitors would be the right power, but we likely want a wider field. The octo space will probably be around 25' diameter. No need to be extremely loud. We're thinking about 8 smallish mid/hi with a couple of small subs.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I don't have experience with any of these, but here are some possibilities:

* Phonic makes a wireless transmitter that they say will work with any active speakers and eliminates the need for laying wires
* Phonic also makes a wireless active speaker for outdoor use
* The Mackie SRM350 is described as a portable active monitor
* Dynaudio BM5A is a small active monitor
* The Genelec site includes a Selection Guide based on the size of the listening distance

I have not listened to any of these solutions and am curious to hear if anyone has experience with using them. What other products are people using for their portable multichannel setups?

The Dynaudios (BM5A) would be a great choice if you can swing them; they have very good frequency response but are not too powerful. The mkII version of these speakers is generally said not to sound as good as the originals. You might be able to get away without subs if you use these.

The Genelec 8030s would sound great also, although for those I would think you'd want a sub also.

The money adds up fast with eight speakers, yow! :-)

Has anyone had an opportunity to hear the Mackie SRMv2 active speakers?

For portable loudspeakers they are pretty good. Better than many in their nominal glass (JBL, Cerwin-Vega, etc). However, for studio work I'd rather a set of ADAMs, BlueSky or Dynaudio (I have the AIR15 series myself).
