Would have liked to know about the current capyara320 owners.
What if some want to keep the old capy and get a paca ?...can the horsepower be 'added'. Or does SSC provide special pricing upon sending them back the old capy and processor cards ?...

judging from what the website was saying about "should i buy a capy *now* or wait...." (and by the level of coolnes shown by SSC in general), i presume there'll be a (quote) "generous upgrade offer". i would surely hope so :-)

Wow, looks awesome!!! Thinking of getting the Pacarana as second Kyma unit for mobile use! But would it be possible to use the Sound Devices 744T as the audio interface of the Pacarana? The 744T has an FireWire port!

Yes it can, I'll defer to SSC for the details.

armand: i don't think the 744 will stream audio through the FW port; the sound devices FAQ state that their recorders can not be used as audio interfaces for computers.

[QUOTE]the price scares me. $3000 for the entry-level model?[\QUOTE]
Same for me, also on the way to get an 8 cores MAC PRO soon, then no money left available for now in the perspective of getting the paca...

Now a question : Will SCC continue to support Capybara320 ?... And if they estimated the interest of making these new processing units, does it mean they also will propose some Kyma Updates that will be highly demanding in terms of processing resources that even half expanded (Capys with 5 or 6 DSP cards in) capys320 won't be able to stand ?....

Sylvain Kepler: I think you can be sure that SSC will continue to support the Capy-320. How long depends on what the major differences between the 320 and the new Paca(rana) is, because since the latter is now the new standard it's to be unexpected that it is also the benchmark for future development.

I have the Capy-66, which is antique by most standards, and it was supported until late last year (it is now supported through a previous version, which doesn't run on my particular MacBook). In other words: Considering how long the 66 was supported, I don't think you have any reason to be afraid the 320 will become "unmodern" any time soon.

Just my opinion, of course.

for those who have asked whether the horsepower can be added -

i spoke with carla and she said - it can be added, however any sound that is run on the capy will be processed on everything upstream being sent from the pacarana. ie if you ran euverb on the capy it would be applied to all sounds output from the pacarana. the one thing that occurred to me after the phone conversation; if it were possible to do something like the following - if you create a number of algorithyms running on the pacarana could you use creative routing on the sound running on the capy as a work around. ie if you could, say, create a complex sound of different filters on the capy and assign eight independant channels of input to those filters; then on the pacarama buss individual parts of a sound to specific channels before being output from the capy. and sadly assigning the timeline to the capy was not a workaround if i understood the conversation fully. you will want to talk to ssc for full details obviously but i thought i would share the basics of the conversation since Namm is underway and they are no doubt busy!!

as far a your audio interface working .. as of that conversation, mid dec, Carla said they had support for the tc electronic fw devices, a working motu fw device ( ultralite) and apogee duet. sadly no rme support at that time. but your capy can still be the front end.

as far as $3000 being expensive - thats a very reasonable price - the basic one is more powerful than my 8 dsp capy and in comparing to apple for 2800 bucks you haven't got enough hard drive space or ram to have a working machine, nor extended warranty, nor will you get anything upgraded for free from apple - no software - natta! .mac accounts extra, mobile me extra ..etc .. has anyone here ever got steve jobs on the phone, let alone after hours.

sorry if it sounds like i am harping. i understand your point 3000 isn't chump change for most musicians and fair enough to that but even a roland gt synth is 3000 and we can't compare the two devices. do i wish it was cheaper - yes i am totally with you - want to start a lobby group?!!! maybe we can earn ssc bucks for helping all the new users who will jump at this offer! 20 ssc bucks for every support response to aid new users!!!

regards r
