Setup:
New 6 Core Mac, lots of ram, etc.. ProTools HD3 -> FW800 to Pacarana, Pacarana -> 800 to 400 cable to Motu Ultralite.

I don't generally use FW drives for ProTools sessions, but there are FW drives mounted occasionally. Always on their own port however.

Issue:
Kyma will loose communication with Pacarana after some time, but an even bigger issue is that when I record tracks in ProTools, such as recording a mix or something, the resulting sound file will have dropouts randomly throughout the file. Turn off the Pacarana and the issue subsides.

I know ProTools has its own way of handling drives connected to the computer, is it possible that the Pacarana just isn't compatible with ProTools running? I have an older macmini that I can dedicate to running Kyma. But it has only FW400 so I don't know if it will work so well..

Well the macmini doesn't seem to be able to handle Kyma, it crashes when selecting Sounds in the browser..

From your description, it sounds as if PT may be assuming that it has 100% of the bus (perhaps for recording multiple simultaneous channels at high sample rates?)

One solution might be to use Kyma's DSP Status window to select Idle whenever you want to record in PT. Then DSP>Initialize DSP when you want to reconnect the Pacarana to the FW bus.

What style Mac Mini do you have (and what OS)? We run Kyma on minis all the time so it is definitely possible to take that route as well.

You mentioned selecting Sounds in the Browser was a problem. Try allocating a larger amount of memory for Kyma on the Mac: Edit>Preferences>Miscellaneous>Initial memory size for Kyma. Try 128 or 256 if your Mac Mini has more than 512 MB.

Thanks for the tips! I'll try adjusting the memory on the mini first. Its a Core Duo 1.66GHz with 2GB of ram..

Still doesn't seem to be happy on the mini.. Since this mini only has FW400 I am wondering if maybe that is the issue? I'll keep at it..

I don't have a screen or keyboard or mouse connected, the computer sits in the machine room and I control it via Screen Sharing. I just hit the power button and it boots right up. There is also a G4 server that I use this way. Much easier than having to use a switch or have lots of keyboards and mice cluttering up the place. This is the first issue to crop up over the years, and why it didn't occur to me right away what the problem was.

I still want to figure whats going on with ProTools on the 6 core however. I suspect it does have something to do with how ProTools deals with the FW buss. Maybe someone else who has tried it (with or without issue) will chime in..

One possibility might be to create an independent FW bus for the Pacarana and the MOTU using a PCI Express FireWire adapter based on the TI chipset.

The Mac Mini issue appears to be related to using OpenGL with screen sharing on a headless mini. The Mini starts up differently when nothing is plugged into is DVI port (you can see that the screen looks different when you share it). If you plug something into the DVI port of the Mini, it appears to screen-share properly.

If you have a DVI to VGA adapter, you could make a dummy plug by putting a resistor across two of the pins (so you wouldn't have to have a real monitor attached). If you would like to try this, please let us know and we can describe how to make the dummy plug.

Ahh, very interesting about the monitor issue. I am curious to make and try a dummy plug. Regarding ProTools, I don't have any slots available for a FW card (HD3 takes up all three slots), also, I would suspect that if it is ProTools grabbing the buss that it would grab the additional buss too..

These instructions suggest 3 resistors, but you should be able to get by with just one resistor between pins 1 and 6. You don't have to solder anything, just put the leads into the plugs.

It may be using most of the bandwidth on the FireWire bus, but it would not be able to grab a different bus. It would use bandwidth only on the bus on which it finds its own devices.

I think ProTools grabs everything whether you are using a drive on a particular buss or not.. I'll try it when I get a chance to have no drives connected and see how it behaves..
