Since updating to Kyma 5.26, I am having all sorts of odd behavior in the VCS.

Controls keep changing and moving around. For example, a Toggle called "Bypass" turns into a Button and changes position in the layout. Also, certain Faders won't stay put, they come up in different positions.

Tonight, a new behavior: an invisible "limit" that I can't move past. If I try to drag a fader past this limit, it re-sizes (shrinks), truncating at that limit. It affects all VCS controls in the same way.

This is either new to 5.26, or it is peculiar to my iBook. (At least the crashing has stopped - but my Internet graphics aren't smooth anymore.)

I could try reverting to 5.25, but would my Sounds still work? I'm on a tight project deadline right now, so I can't afford too much downtime.

The difference between 5.25 and 5.26 was very small: it fixed a bug with encryption of user microsound files and fixed a problem that would occur when working with 3 character file names on the Macintosh. (These problems were found, fixed, and uploaded to the support site within a week of each other, which is why we did not announce it.)

The Toggle->Button problem and the moving Faders problem could occur if you are editing the rightmost Sound of the signal flow diagram when you make the changes to the VCS. You can get around this by double-clicking in the background of the Sound editor before playing the Sound and editing its VCS.

Another possible cause of faders moving around would be if they have overlapping layout boxes -- the VCS does not like that and tries to move them so that they do not overlap.

The "invisible limit" -- is it in the feedback that you get while resizing the fader, or does the shrinking occur only after you stop resizing?

All of these issues occur when editing layouts in Timelines.

The "invisible limit" seems to be related to how large the VCS window was before a Sound is placed in the Timeline. Once it is in a Timeline and I open it for editing, the problem occurs. When I drag a fader outside of the area of the original VCS window, it will truncate at that boundry when I release the mouse. If I move it completely outside, it disappears entirely and cannot be recovered.

I have another problem - when I click on the "Selected Value" pull-down menu in the VCS editor, I get "ERROR: Illegal menu combination".

I should say that my Timeline has about 15-18 Sounds in it, and probably 200 VCS controls. Some of the Sounds are repeated in the same track, so they share a set of controls. I am trying to use different sub-layouts to make some sense of all this. I have spent almost as much time editng the VCS as I have developing the individual Sounds - it is very frustrating.

We will look into the resizing/placement problems that you are having (I think we can replicate it).

Do you think that you could compress your timeline and email it to us so that we can check out the "illegal menu combination" problem?

Thanks!

illegalmenucombination.kym

Here is a single Sound which exhibits the "illegal menu combination" error when you attempt to select widgets from the pull-down menu in the VCS editor.
