Having read about Pacarana configuration I am still unsure about audio interfaces. Am I right in my understanding that the Pacarana needs its own audio interface? (I read that the Pacarana should have control over the audio interface rather than the computer.)

I'm wondering how a Pacarana integrates into a studio setup. For example, if I'm using a DAW, would I need an audio interface for the DAW as well as the Pacarana or can the DAW use the audio interface which is assigned to the Pacarana too?

Nevertheless i have made the experience that, if you connect
via
Pc -- Audio I/O --- Paca(rana)
then you can use the audio interface with your DAW when you just leave the paca turned off.
One is adviced to not install the drivers for the specific audio interface, so the PC does not "catch" the interface before the paca does.
So all this is not something that works with every setup and the order of starting audio programs and so on can have big influence on if it works, i guess.
That said, i had a stable setup like this on mac osx 10.6, macBookPro,
Motu 828 mk3.

hope this helps,
patrik

Thanks Patrik for that. However, I should have mentioned that I would mostly want to be using a Pacarana with a DAW simultaneously.

In that case, you could route digital outputs from the converter dedicated to the Pacarana into the digital inputs of your DAW converter where you could do a digital mix before converter to analog. For examples of how others have done it, please see:

Sorry to sound cheap but I'm wondering now how to upgrade to a Pacarana on a budget - i.e. which is the 'best cheapest' audio interface users could recommend to use with a Pacarana for getting audio into a DAW. (I'd prefer not to use my Capy as a converter for a Pacarana).

Regarding the setups on ( http://www.symbolicsound.com/cgi-bin/bin/view/Learn/SettingUpPacarana ) could the second converter (for the DAW) be on the same FireWire bus? (The iMac I am using has just a single FireWire 800 bus.)

Yes, the two converters can be on the same FireWire bus (as long as the Mac does not have any drivers that would try to take over the Pacarana's converter).

Here's a list of the supported converters (with links to more info on each, generously supplied by Charlie Norton--thanks Charlie!): http://www.symbolicsound.com/Learn/SupportedConverters for purposes of comparing the numbers of inputs/outputs and prices.

Thanks for the info!

I have edited Charlie's tweaky entry to include some pricing guides for devices I could find prices for. (Obtained from JustMusic.de which tend to have competitive prices.)
