Like many of you I was ecstatic when I learned that Symbolic Sound was fully embracing Kyma OSC support. It is truly a bold step (one of the few companies to pioneer this important standard), and one that adds vast new potential to the already unbound Kyma system. Yet with all that Symbolic Sound had one additional trick up their sleeves that you may have overlooked: "MIDI over OSC". This is an incredible addition to your Paca or Pacarana and, as far as I know, Symbolic Sound is the first to ship a true MIDI facility using the OSC standard!

MIDI over OSC is the basis of how we (Harmony Systems) were able to improve our vM2 product with near automatic setup. It also eliminates the pair of MIDI interfaces that were previously needed with the Paca(rana). But there are other ways that MIDI over OSC benefits, one of which is the basis of our latest product: PacaMidi.

PacaMidi uses MIDI over OSC to create a "virtual MIDI interface and patchbay" that adds three merged MIDI inputs and one MIDI output to a Paca(rana). Most setups will find that this eliminates the Paca(rana) MIDI interface requirement completely. It simplifies a studio or stage set up.

For example, say you have a USB MIDI keyboard and a MotorMix or BCF2000 that you want to use with your Paca(rana). Without PacaMidi you need a MIDI interface for your Paca(rana) and one for your computer to connect to the Paca(rana). You also need an application like "Midi Pipe" (or Max) running a DIY "program" that correctly "merges" MIDI from the keyboard and MotorMix, then sends it onto the Paca(rana). This "program" also needs to receive MIDI from the Paca(rana) and forward it on to the MotorMix. Every time you want to use Kyma you have to remember to start this application and load the DIY "program".

PacaMidi eliminates all of this and those two Paca(rana) specific MIDI interfaces. It is a small, resource-light native OSX application that silently runs in the background and is always available to send MIDI to and from the Paca(rana). Once it is set up you can have it run automatically whenever you log into your Mac.

It offers two external MIDI "ports" that you can assign to any two external MIDI CoreMidi devices (keyboards, etc that show up in Audio Midi Setup). MIDI from these devices is merged with the third "virtual" port, "Paca(rana) (see next paragraph) and forwarded to the Paca(rana) using networked MIDI over OSC. Likewise MIDI from the Paca(rana) is routed back to what ever devices you assigned to the two external ports and the applications using the virtual port..

PacaMidi's "virtual port", "Paca(rana)", is available to any CoreMidi compatible application. Software like Logic, Ableton Live, Cubase, Max, Numerology, and and others can use it to send and receive MIDI with the Paca(rana). Again all without the need of additional MIDI interfaces and cables.

So if you have been frustrated trying to get your MotorMix (or BCF2000) and your favorite keyboard controller to all "play nice" with your Paca or Pacarana, or you want a simpler way to hook up your Kyma kit and use it with your DAW/sequencer, check out PacaMidi.

We have just begun a public beta. If you are interested in participating please send a request to beta@delora.com. Feel free to email info@delora.com should you have any questions, or just post them on this thread and I will answer. Go to www.delora.com for additional information on PacaMidi and our other Kyma related product vM2.

I've got to say that this is really a huge step forward.

Today I was able to connect my Eigenharp Alpha to Kyma from eigenD's virtual midi port to Kyma's paca(rana) port and the performance difference from the old way through the audio interface is quite staggering. The Alpha can generate a huge amount of midi information including a lot of aftertouch information etc. It's the first time midi feels like a native plugin.

I'd also like to say again that the new vM2 is the most easy to use and intuitive pacakging of a Lemur app I have ever come across. The preference panel has status lights that monitor all aspects of your connections and tell you what to turn etc. It is as close to zero configuration as a Lemur app can get. So now I just turn on the Lemur, the Eigenharp and Kyma and I have an instantly ON and connected performance environment (no DAW involved) unless I want it to be.

I think we are very fortunate to have community members supporting Kyma like this. I know more than a few forum members helped with beta testing and even programming of these new features and plugins.

I was very fortunate today to have something else wonderful happen. I've been plagued with firewire/audio issues (audio dropouts and stalls) with Kyma ever since getting the system and it was really hindering my progress. It was my fault for not seeking help earlier but with the help of Carla and Kurt today the issue was resolved. It was a bad FW800 cable. The difference was immediate and quite incredible. I'm looking forward to many productive hours with Kyma now.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Andy,

It's actually a default patch. It's Plectrum KBD monophonic. No edits were made.

I am building some max patches for the manta. I have a nice little subpatcher for using your midi external and also discovering pacarana via oscbonjour and automating OSC params. I'll post those when they get more mature and I get a chance to clean it up etc.

I highly recommend the PacaMidi app. It is a very handy helper app and has worked perfectly since setup. Very handy for integrating a motor mix and also makes it easier to use an keyboard controller without having to have another app open to helping IO routing (at least in my particular setup).

To Sean:

Unfortunately not at this time. We are currently very focused on Apple's platforms.

To: Keph:

Thanks for the kind words!

Just purchased this brilliant little app. Worked immediately, without requiring any sort of brain on my behalf (which would have been a lost battle hehe).

HIGHLY recommended!

Just wanted to briefly announce that we have released PacaMidi version 1.0.1. The main improvements are that the MTC issues has been fixed, and PacaMidi now supports multiple Paca(rana)s (for those of you so fortunate who are not connecting them using the "wormhole"). Basically if PacaMidi "sees" more than one Paca(rana) on the network it gives you the option to connect to a specific one, or you can do nothing and it will choose one for you.

There are other minor improvements. For more details see http://www.delora.com/delora_products/pacamidi/pacamidi.html.

If you have licensed PacaMidi you should have already received the update via the email you used when you purchased it. If you did not receive this please contact us, support@delora.com.

Thank you,

Doug

With the introduction of Delora Software's just released KymaConnect we have decided to discontinue PacaMidi. KymaConnect includes all of the same functions as PacaMidi, plus a great deal more. Its extra external MIDI devices, routing table, and channel mapping should be welcome additions to any Kyma set up that makes use of USB MIDI controllers or external MIDI devices. More information about KymaConnect is available in a post by that subject, or you can visit the website to learn all about it: www.delora.com
