I was wondering if it is possible for the Metric Halo ULN-8 to be Pacarana compatible? (or the other Metric Halo interfaces?).

I read another post by SSC on here from January 2009 (I think the thread was "Pacarana and I/O"), saying it would be difficult or even impossible for these interfaces to be supported because they use a proprietary FW protocol? Two years later I'm wondering if this is any clearer, i.e. whether it is impossible or not? It seems like a very long time since the list of Pacarana supported interfaces was updated, is this because the ones listed are pretty much the only ones that are going to work with the Pacarana?

For me it would be a massive bonus for the ULN-8 to work with the Pacarana, it just seems like the perfect interface for Kyma. It is my main interface in the studio (with Pro Tools 9), and I currently use a TC Digital Konnekt X32, hooked up to the AES/EBU I/Os of the ULN-8, giving 8 audio channels available in PT (e.g. as hardware inserts) to and from Kyma. This works great in the studio...

However I recently had an opportunity to use Kyma as part of a live installation, set up in surround. I don't do so much live work at the moment but it's something I'm seriously considering getting into. If I could've used the ULN-8 for this it would've been ideal... However this would've involved taking my whole PT rig as well as the Pacarana rig, and basically setting it up as I have in the studio, which is not practical at all (the only other Pacarana compatible interface I have is the Apogee Duet, obviously no use for surround).

If I can't use the ULN-8 with the Pacarana I have to say this is a major disappointment for me, and will probably mean I'll have to give up on the idea of ever using Kyma for surround in a live context. Unless I've missed something and there is some way to use Kyma and Pro Tools9 on the same machine, with PT accessing the ULN-8 and the audio somehow being fed between PT and Kyma. But I'm pretty sure this is impossible as the Pacarana needs an interface to run? Any advice appreciated, thanks.

MH have a great reputation and they use a proprietary protocol for FireWire AV/C streaming. We can write drivers only for audio converters that follow the standard AV/C streaming protocol. (In other words, we do not know the MH protocol because they do something different from the standard and do not publish their protocol).

There have been lots of new converters added to this list since its inception (http://www.symbolicsound.com/Learn/SupportedConverters), most recently the Apogee Ensemble.

Regarding live surround setups, there are several supported converters that have 8 audio outputs and can do live surround or 8 channel live setups, for example:

Apogee Ensemble
Lynx Aurora 8/FW
MOTU 896 mk3
Echo AudioFire12
M-Audio ProFire 2626
MOTU 828 mk3
MOTU Traveler mk3
MOTU UltraLite mk3
MOTU UltraLite mk3 Hybrid
PreSonus FireStudio Project
Prism Orpheus
TC Electronic Studio Konnekt 48

Thanks for the quick response, just to be clear is it actually impossible that the ULN-8 can be made to be compatible with the Pacarana? So basically I need to go out and buy another interface?!

The support team at Metric Halo seem really great/helpful and quick to respond, so just wondering has there been any contact between SSC and MH Labs regarding the possibility of making the ULN-8 (or other interfaces) compatible? If not is it worth me asking their support team about it? Just wondering if it could be possible if there is a collaboration, or whether it is technically impossible...

I'm fully aware of the list of interfaces available, and which ones support surround. I asked the question because I'm not willing to purchase another FW interface which is lower quality than what I already have, and would be otherwise redundant.

The reason I chose the Metric Halo ULN-8 is that the price to feature ratio (and in most cases the sound quality/conversion) in my opinion is way ahead of any of the interfaces mentioned on that list. The only ones which come close at the Lynx Aurora 8 FW, which would be useless in my studio setup because it doesn't have any preamps. Or the Prism Orpheus which only has 4 preamps and nowhere near the features of the ULN-8.

Not sure if anybody else is following this, or interested, but I contacted Metric Halo a few days ago as well. They said there is no class driver for the MIO currently available, but in the future they may look look at what they can do to provide compatibility with Symbolic Sound Paca/Pacarana. But they also said there is no timetable for this at present.

This would be great to get Metric Halo supported. I'm a long timed MH 2882 user and would by a second one for Kyma, although I'm gone with TC digital connect 32 for Pacarana for now.

Happy to hear this would be useful to somebody else too, thought it was just me. I'm resigned to the fact it looks like this will not happen very quickly though...

I also think being able to use the MIO +DSP character in combination with Kyma in a live setup would sound pretty incredible!

For me the best solution would be a usb/firewire card with a couple of adat i/0.
Then one could integrate it with his setup.
No extra preamps. no carrying issues etc.
Easy cheap and efficient

I have MIO2882+TC impact twin for my paca as well. I think it would be very difficult for Symbolic Sound to implement MIOconsole even if they would get the interface working with Kyma X. At the moment I am quite satisfied with connecting the two units via ADAT i/o to get 8 channels in and out of Kyma into teh MIOconsole MIxer and mixing everything in there (including mic inputs). At the moment I'm having some trouble with getting the 3 units to work in the same FW800buss, but I believe this will be resolved when Metric Halo will release their USB-upgrade this fall...

It would be nice to see though the steinberg cards being included in that list
I have the MR816X which is excellent and can double as a surround monitor.
This is something not possible with the impact twin for example (this is the one i use for pacarana as well)

I agree, I am sure it would be pretty tricky to get the mio to work with kyma x. I am also looking forward to the MIO USB upgrade this fall. I have been able to run 4 interfaces on 1 fw 800 bus with a little sketchyness, I am now running two on the FW800 port and two of them out via thunderbolt so far so good.
