In Edit>Preferences under Performance, set the operating environment to "Hot". That will keep the fans running to keep your processors from overheating.

Particulates *can* get sucked in and accumulate electrostatically on the front panel. But the only time we've seen this happen is with very fine particles like plaster dust (not with cigarette smoke). So don't bring it to a club where they are smoking plaster

Dropping liquids into the vent holes of the Paca(rana) is not recommended

I played in some really hot clubs / venues over the last years ;-)
My Pacarana is mounted in a 4U Case-Bag for airplane traveling ... together with a MOTU 828 and a Konnekt 48.
I removed my 1U "sample drive" in the first summer and left 1U Space between the Audiointerfaces and the Pacarana.
I did not found any server rack FAN or something similar which will blow horizontal through the 1U space.. so i just used a blank panel with simple venting holes for protection.

In clubs it gets really hot in the case! On sound-checks i always check that the preferences are set for "Hot!"

For the last four years since i use the pacarana live i had no problems with that setup.

All the best
Chris

p.s. be sure to secure your firewire cables when playing near sound-systems with heavy bass... on my old computer i started to "tape" them to my firewire port..because one time the vibrations made the cable disconnect... bummmmm ;-)

thank you very much and I am happy to read your statements. I love my paca and I thought he looks like a fragile good which is better to use in studio conditions only.
@christian: what a kind of 4u case-bag do you use? unfortunately, symbolic sounds pacarana-bag is out of stock

Gator Cases 4U Rack Bag GRB-4U

very cheap but okay. A friend of mine already "tested it" fully loaded drooping it onto the pavement ... All still works and no damage was done so it seams to be not so bad.

since the paca is smaller then the pacarana i would suggest a shorter bag..

best
chris

wow, thats a very cool rackbag!
I guess the rack mounting brackets from the symbolic sound shop are for mounting pacarana and paca. therefore I could mount my paca in this rackbag, isn't it?
furthermore I'd like to add my audiointerfaces saffire pro 40 and konnekt 24d. the last last one is my problem. how could I hard-code it in the 19" rack? are there any adaptors?

I've used Pacarana for hundreds of shows in clubs, outdoors, galleries even an ice rink - I only ever had one overheat in a crazy hot basement in the middle of the summer. I was overheating!

Some tips:

Be mindful during setup! Work in slow motion, doing one thing at a time.

Make sure the house technician is not messing with power strips, unplugging mains that your rig is plugged in to.

Make sure your hardware is switched off.

Pause before plugging in the Power Supply to your Paca(rana) - check the power supply is disconnected from the mains before you connect it to your Paca(rana). Look at it the connector, check you are about to plug it the right way up.

Pause before doing the Firewire connections. Look at the FW400 or FW800 your are holding in your hands - Check they are the right way up!! - Connect them one by one - Interface to Pacarana first. Double check. Pacarana to Computer next. Double check.

Power everything up. Computer, then interface then Pacarana then Kyma.

Dont let anyone put drinks near your rig!

thank you for your hints, cristian!
I will heed your advice next time. what kind of transport/live solution do you have? I mean do you use a rack-bag, too?

http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_producer_backpack.htm

I bought one of these to carry Paca/TC-electronic Impact Twin +cables. I cannot fit my macbook in there, but it's now my favourite bag for going on the field/ for gigs.

There seems to be a fault in the design though. The seams of backpack-shoulder straps are very weak and they break if you load the bag full of cables or other heavy stuff. I had my mother (a retired fashion-design teacher and seamstress) to help me out with the straps. She re-did the seams and now it's a lot better.

TC-impact twin is the same formfactor as 24d, so the bag should work for it as well.

The bag also comes with an "over the shoulder" strap that seems to be a lot stronger than the backpack-shoulder straps.
