I am presently usinf an echo audiofire.

Which soundcards are people using with the paca(rana), which is considered to be the best (if any), most stable, best sound quality etc?

If using a soundcard with digital outs is the audio quality coming from the paca(rana) passing out more or less unchanged as digital information?

Obviously using some of the cheaper cards one can't expect high quality da conversion, but if the audio signal remains digital until it reaches a decent card (in my case an rme ff 800) will it remain unimpaired until then?

I've used a TC Konnekt 24D, a TC Konnekt 48 and a Motu Traveler Mk3 with my Pacarana. The only problem i had was with the Traveler because i forgot to reset the setup before using it with the pacarana.
All in all i like the Motus because they work great with Mac OS X and the pacarana.
The TCs i use exclusively with the pacarana.

The best price & quality soundcard is the TC Konnekt 24D... It is not so expansive and has only 4 Analog I/O s for live and 8 channels of ADAT I/O for the Studio. Build quality is good... it is a bit heavy compared to a Motu Ultralie MK3... but has the ADAT I/O s the small Motu does not.
In my current live rig i use the 24D for the pacarana and a Motu 828 for the other Laptop all built into a 4HE portable rack which exactly matches the requirements for hand luggage compartments. It is a bit heavy then allowed but i had no complaints till know.
One 1 HE above the pacarana is free because of the heat the unit produces.

just my 5 cent
Chris

I have my eye out for a konnekt 24d. I got the audiofire 4 just so i could get on and start using the paca.

Do you find the sound quality to be better when using a digital signal path through the 24d to your sound card as opposed to using its da converters?

The TC 24D analog audio quality is really good for the price. I did not measure the DAs but to my ears they are the same quality then the ones used in the Konnekt 48.
I just use ADAT in the studio because then i can use 8 Inputs and Outputs at the same time. The Motu Traveler MK3 i use is a little bit darker sounding and i am not so happy that they removed the -20dB PAD function for the first four Line Inputs compared to the Traveler MK1.
PAD now only works for the Mic preamps on the MK3.
All in all the gain stages on the old Traveler MK1 where better. But the MK1 does not work with Kyma... or i did not manage to get it to work.

So all in all i am happy with the 24D.
If I get a good deal on a Konnekt 48 again i will upgrade my livesetup to it. But only because of the additional I/O.

I hope that helps a bit.
Have a nice day
Chris

Hi Chris,

sorry for late response. Thanks for the info. I still haven't managed to track down a konnekt 24d. Will have to be more vigilant! : )

The TC Impact Twin is virtually identical to the 24D and should be easier to find.

I use the Motu Ultralie MK3 and the Motu Traveler MK3 - both are excellent. In a recent project for a contemporary dance company I used the Traveler with Kyma and the Ultralie with the Mac which was running Reaper - ran it all from one Macbook Air - perfect for touring

I have used a MOTU Traveler MK3 with the pacarana for a short time too. It is a good choice too.
But i upgraded to a Konnekt 48 a few weeks ago because of the additional outputs compared to the 24D and the overall better sound to the MOTU.

My TC Konnekt 24D is up for sale if somebody is interested.

Sound-wise both TCs are a bit more transparent to my ears and the TC pre-amps are much better then the MK3 MOTU pre-amps...
I also use an old Traveler MK1 in the studio which has better pre-amps then the MK3... somehow MOTU changed the design...not to the best.

Anyway if i "word-clock" my two MOTUs from the TC Konnekt as master both MOTUs are sound very similar to the TC on the line inputs/outputs.

I wish you and your families a Happy Holiday Season and all the best for the New Year.

best
Chris

Thanks for sharing your experience Christian. I'm also starting the process of finding a nice interface to use for my imminent Pacarana purchase.

I'm particularly wary of moving from the Capybara's fine sound, which I've grown accustomed to, to something that is unknown. So, I will probably keep the Capy around for awhile.

Wow, this proves the 'waiting for a bus' effect! I have been trying to find a used konnekt 24d for some time and now 3 have come along at once! (there are 2 others available to me just now) : )

What are you asking for the konnekt 24d?
