I have a few questions I hope someone can help me with : )

Is there a way to make the Memory Writer record in stereo rather than mono? In fact, is there an easy way to make any particular sound stereo? By adding an argument for example (as in Max/MSP)?

Also, can ASCII code be used to control a sound in realtime?

Thanks!

Hi Jack,

You would have to record and playback with two memory writers in parallel, I'm afraid. Still, it shouldn't be that difficult. If it's something you expect to be doing often, you might look at making a new class that is a stereo memory writer. Internally it would be writing to two different files - and then you could have another new class which is two sample players going into a stereo mixer, one reading the left file and the other the right.

Stereo processing can sometimes be difficult to maintain in a patch. I personally have created new classes that are stereo filters and stereo compressors, just because I prefer the convenience of having those things in a single object, rather than the types of multi-object constructions that you'll see in the prototypes bar under "Filters-Stereo."

As far as using ASCII in a sound goes, I assume that you mean using keyboard input to transmit midi that you can use to control the VCS? If you have Max, you can use the "hi" (human interface) object to get messages from your keyboard and then have keyboard input send midi controllers out of Max (the "key" and "keyup" objects don't work so well because they only work when Max is in the foreground).

Hopefully sometime I can get around to putting some things like this up on the Tweaky (I could make a Max-runtime version of the Max patch).

Phil

Thanks for your thoughts Phil, that sounds like a good compromise.
