We got the following email from a Kyma System owner who was having problems after he replaced his PC motherboard, and we thought it could be of some benefit to other PC users who may have encountered similar problems when running Kyma and Logic Audio at the same time.

...this wasn't a Kyma problem after all, though it seemed like it due to how the lockups were mostly triggering. It seemed that there were most often lockups when I was running Kyma and Logic Audio Platinum. I went ahead and reinstalled the OS from the ground up, and enabled one card at a time to see if I could narrow down the possibilities. It turns out that it was an issue between my USB MIDI router (emagic Unitor 8 MK II), the USB chipset on my motherboard, and Windows 98 SE.

Basically, Kyma would run fine, Logic would run fine, but when I tried to run them together, I'd get random lockups.

I dug a patch out from the Microsoft web site that addressed some issues with Windows 98 SE and certain ABIT motherboards. After installing it, things have been working like a charm, and I am very, very, very relieved.

Now I can get back on the road to playing with my Kyma. Sorry for any false alarms I might have caused you. Other ABIT motherboard / Kyma users might benefit from installing the Microsoft patch if they have lockup problems. I know that I did! :^)

What/where might this file be? I searched the Microsoft site for "Abit" and found nothing like this.

...to answer my own question, you have to search with "USB" as the keyword, as the problem is not specific to Abit, but to motherboards in general that use the VIA chipset. The site claims VIA USB controller and AMD CPU running faster than 350 MHz, but it may also be for Abit Pentium mobos that use the Via set. The url is: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=12904
