It seems to me that the Loopfade switch in the sample prototype is not crossfading, so leaving an audible gap. Is that true or am I missing something?

LoopFade does not cross fade, it just ramps down to zero as it approaches the loop point, and ramps up immediately after looping.

Please, for the wishlist: LoopCrossFade with variable fade length.

Any workaround?
