Garth Paine has reported some possible problems with the use of FileVault (a file encryption service that is part of Macintosh OS 10.3). Some evidence seems to link its use to the loss of data and the corruption of Timeline and wavetable files.

We haven't been able to independently identify what could be going wrong with FileVault, but we thought we should alert you to the possibility that it could corrupt your sound and data files.

If you have experiences (successful or unsuccessful) with using FileVault (whether or not it is in conjunction with Kyma X) please let us know.

Once we can establish what the problem is (and whether or not FileVault is the source of the problem), we will post a warning with more information on the tweaky.

Their was a 10.3 file vault known issue. Not sure if it is the same/related. I believe it was addressed in 10.3.1.

Hi all

I have turned FileVault off and have had no problems since. I am using OS 10.3.2, where Apple have stated they have fixed the problem, but I had a lot of problems with files not being found by Kyma and full bandwidth noise appearing in sample files that were clean, so I suggest staying clear of FileVault.

excuse my ignorance Garth, i could not find out how to turn off Filevault in the last Panther version. I have a very large amount of AIFF files with full bandwith noise in them. I thought it happened copying my internal disk to ext HD using Carbon Copy software...

open system perferences > under accounts > security tab you can then manage file vault by user account. it is disabled by default.
