The integration of QuickTime within Kyma is great - just a few questions though...

i) When playing a movie with an audio track - Can this audio track be routed in Kyma itself for processing or is the audio output from the movie managed by the OS bypassing Kyma? (The meters in the DSP Status window do not show any audio output from Kyma).

ii) Would it be possible to sample data from a QuickTime movie (e.g. a pre-defined 64x64 pixel portion of a movie) to drive perhaps a running average of RGB values which could be used to drive Kyma parameters : so that the movie 'becomes the score'.

iii) Any plans for other QuickTime sources, i.e. Live video input?

but of course you can execute all those ideas and more in Jitter or Processing and generate as many OSC streams as you like from a movie, send them Kyma . Those languages are primarily graphic languages, they will do everything you need, and then you make the sound in Kyma, which is its forte , of course!

Hi cristian_vogel,

I'm curious about MAx/Msp/Jitter, have you some example of video which pilot some parameters of Kyma ?
Thanks,

Samy

Hi Photonal,

Doesn't Quicktime play Quartz Composer compositions? I've just started looking at Quartz Composer, and see that it has OSC support - so maybe you can set up a Quartz Composer patch with OSC outputs and play it from the timeline? I know you've been working with Quartz Composer - if you can get this to work I'd like to hear about it...

From what I understand about Quicktime playback of Quartz Composer files (.qtz files), they can have live input parameters and are not static movies, so you could also set them up to receive OSC messages from the Pacarana.

Okay, I've downloaded Kyma X 6.77 now and tried to run a .qtz file myself, and unfortunately it doesn't run.

I notice that when running the .qtz file directly in Apple's Quicktime program itself that it shows up without a timeline/strip along the bottom, which makes sense because it is an open-ended patch that doesn't have a predetermined duration. Maybe the current implementation of Quicktime support in Kyma doesn't support quicktime files without a duration.

Also, I notice that when playing .mov or .mp4 files that the Kyma timeline comes to a halt when the end of the movie is reached, and there doesn't seem to be a way to make the movies loop. It might be nice to have a way to loop movies, and it might be nice that allow the timeline to continue playing even if the movie has ended.

It would be amazing to be able to play the Quartz Composer compositions tied directly to the Kyma timeline, especially since at least theoretically (since I haven't tried it yet) OSC communication between the two should be possible.

I think if you put some Kyma Sounds into the Timeline that extend beyond the end of the QuickTime, the Kyma-generated audio does continue beyond the end of the movie.

My mistake - audio does continue as long as you have a sound going.

I noticed that resuming after a "Wait Until" seems to move the movie playback back a few frames.

Still, I'm very excited by the possibilities...
