I have uploaded a couple of samples.
http://www.symbolicsound.com/cgi-bin/bin/view/Share/Samples

The night time ambience: 'is what it is' (Perhaps a bit quiet, yet it is ambience...)

The wobble board: this has potential. I have made quite a few sounds from this rather silly source. It is captured relatively cleanly. (judge for yourself ;-p)

I have been abusing the good nature of this forum, and thought it time I contribute beyond a few Tweaky tweaks. My Sound programming is *still* Noob status, so i thought some source might be more appropriate.

A moment of doubt: Is uploading larger files to Tweaky bad form as this ultimately costs SS bandwidth $ somewhere along the journey? I could upload and link in elsewhere, but I prefer the concept of donating just to the Kyma community at this point.

Let me know if you like the wobble, I am considering a 88.2 session in a dead room with better recording technology. I would be happy to share these in return for your continuing replies to my dumbass questions and if a few of you upload some nice new sounds/expressions/scripts to the Tweaky.

Build it, they will come.

Happy Wobbling

Charlie

OH, really, you are too kind and patient. (everybody generally actually)

I have horrible habit of posting what ever random issue I am facing without enough consideration or research: laziness basically. However, my Kyma time is limited and precious: I tend to want it to go bang whizz immediately!

Having reviewed a few of the threads started by myself, some sensibly pitched, others rather silly, one thing is common: The discussions generated are always fascinating.

Having been looking around recently online for Kyma related news and discussion, the opinion and rhetoric is relatively sound, however I did come across a couple of discussions along the way where it was suggested that the forum and tweaky did not live up to their expectations.

Whilst there are some functional issues with the forum, the only one I can really think that holds us back: is that navigation and searching all the private forums takes too many clicks, lends to frustration and then repeated posts.

I have to say having been a member of a variety of forums over the years,(not usually for very long) that this is one of the most helpful, un-judging, informative & civilised forums I have ever been a member of. I have never had any sarcasm, criticism/flaming etc directed at me, (when actually there have been some deserving moments), nor I have I ever witnessed any. In-fact I can't think of any reasons (forum side) that would put anyone off from posting questions.

When it comes to the Tweaky, it is a community whose members are free to shape its future.
The only reason there are a million and one Nord Modular patches on the internez, because their users have uploaded them.

It is not that simple however, part of the paradox i feel, is that once you get to a certain level of Kyma sound construction ability, your sounds and techniques pretty much become part of your intelectual property as much as the audio they might produce.

Perhaps also as a Noob, it can be a bit intimidating posting basic questions amongst posts containing concepts you are two or three years from scratching the surface on. (Judging from posts, many people including myself, have come into Kyma though more tangible analogue/digital devices, thus FFT, re-synthesis etc are topics best saved for when you understand how kyma works. (mmm perhaps I may make a 'n00b Korner' on the tweaky)
Perhaps a introductory forum might be a nice addition. (perhaps even I could offer some solutions for a change)

The answer: all the Paca(rana) freshies who did not own Capybaras who are currently compiling away on their journey though sound, maths, physics and insomnia need to step up, ask questions no matter how ridiculous, make posts, edit and upload random interesting things to the tweaky.

Perhaps start off with a nice post in this 'Confab' section saying hello and tell us how you are getting on with your new unit.

I refuse to believe that all the new members have:
A) Magically become one with the various windows and tools
B) Have encyclopedic knowledges of all things audio, maths and scripting.
C) Genuinely no curiosities, questions or randomisations they would like to discuss regarding their Kyma experience.

When I was first learning Kyma, I did have many gaps where I got frustrated with my progress though the Kyma XRevealed, would abandon it for a while, and then build up the motivation to dive back into things, in retrospect, building up a relationship with the forum and tweaky are just as important as navigating the KymaXRevealed

I do remember one of my first posts, topic was something like : KymaXRev section 3 is melting my brain.
Many people came to my rescue at that point, I had got too trapped in trying complete the book, rather than following my own path of experimentation and discovery, ultimately forging my own unique way of using the tools.

So, thanks again for all the love and support, and if you yourself have not received or indeed given some forum/tweaky lovin, then it is time you bathe in its glory.

Um wow, that's some long rambling, sorry, and sorry for any bad grammar.

Long Live Kyma.

Ok. Gonna be brief now coz I'm typing this on the iPhone in bed and it's late
Another thought provoking post which I plan on responding to point by point.

In short I also want to help the newcomers here with some advice, tips and uploads. Probably my biggest early difficulty was wrapping my head around the coding side of Kyma. Having very little exposure to much more than excel formula and a teeny bit of SQL and visual basic, coding was unexplored territory. I highly recommend the Dolphin smalltalk tutorials as a starte for coding noobs. It helped me a lot.
My current work is focussed on how to get a rich, warm, fat tone into some of my constructions as I'm finding them a bit hard and metallic. I am working on an analog synth creation I call Jabba (cos it's pretty damn fat) which I'd like to share when it's more developed.
Anyhow. Will discuss this further soon.
Cheers
Sean

Good thread!

I have a Paca, and I am no doubt still a noob too after more than a year and a half with Kyma, and I have still not made it through Kyma X Revealed! I have been exploring about 5% of the potential I guess, but I have had a lot of fun in doing so. My biggest problem is scripting, and I have downloaded Dolphin Smalltalk with the intention of going through the tutorials, but had not had time yet. Besides, there is a lot else to learn as well, and I would say that scripting is the furthest away from my comfort zone, to say the least. I am having a blast just connecting a few delays and filters together, and making use of the wonderful cross-synthesis features in Kyma. I have yet to do any serious FFT, bank-type and aggregate type synthesis apart from granular stuff. Then there is so much else to explore.

I love the fact that Kyma is a real time system, and that is one of the main reasons for me investing in it in the first place. It as slowly replaced bits and pieces of hardware in my humble studio as my knowledge grows. I expect that it will take me quite a while to understand parts of this system. I come from a hardware background, and at first (still, actually) Kyma was a major culture shock for me, which I did expect and have come to terms with. I don't like to do things the easy way always. :P

I have been reading away at the forums - I still need to make more use of the Tweaky, and at some point finish going through the examples in the manual, etc etc etc. I must admit that I have been feeling a little shy to ask questions, but I will. I have in fact had some problems with the timeline that I need to address. Hopefully next week.

Rob

Some more source material for you to have a go at.

(guitar pickup + Flash Recorder)

I will be back on the Tweaking shortly, I have one more report to write before I can engage!

Happy sampling, please post some sounds!
