Author | Topic: Jazzmutant Lemur or iPad as Kyma Controller? |

![]() ![]() ![]() I think there was another thread about the iPad but can't find it now... For the first time in ages I'm able to make a few upgrades to the studio (woo hoo!), and I've been thinking about a decent controller for Kyma for ages. Firstly I will be getting a Wacom tablet. I guess this opens up a lot of possibilities already. I have been interested in the Jazzmutant Lemur for a while. But as the iPad is just coming out the Lemur seems really expensive if the iPad can do most of the same stuff. I'm mainly using it in the studio so doesn't matter that the iPad is not as rugged. How would I hook up the iPad to the Pacarana anyway? I don't even know what connections it has. And is there any software currently that would be compatible with Kyma? How about the Delora vm2 software which works on the Lemur, is this likely to work on the iPad? My main problem at the moment is I only have MIDI controllers to hook up to Kyma, and the resolution is not fine enough for many parameters. With the appropriate software would the iPad be able to control VCS parameters in high resolution? Thanks! IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() While I haven't done it yet, I suspect something like TouchOSC would get you a long way there. http://hexler.net/software/touchosc

![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for the links, I've also e-mailed the Delora people to see if the vm2 software will be ported over, coz that would be pretty great and minimum setting up/tweaking required... I'll see what happens over the next few months, I guess quite a few Kyma users will be interested in using the iPad? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() I am holding back for now, mainly because I am interested in seeing what else will be coming our way soon. I'm thinking that instead of having an other peripheral, maybe in a year or two there will be a tablet that can run Kyma itself, and all the editing will be touch based, not just the VCS. I am only dreaming of course, but I don't see why this won't happen sooner or later. I hope that Apple will release something suitable once they have sold enough iPads... IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Yes, I actually got a reply from the Delora people (Harmony Systems) which sounded optimistic that they would be developing something for the iPad, although they couldn't say anything definite. It sounded pretty positive though. For me the iPad/vm2 software combo would be ideal if they do bring it out, cheaper and more convenient than a MotorMix, and much cheaper than a Lemur! Saw something on MusicRadar from Jazzmutant saying the iPad has a different kind of touch screen to the Lemur, which is not as rugged so not as suitable for live performance (because it doesn't work as well with sweaty fingers or something?!). That wouldn't be an issue for me though really, as I'd be using it almost exclusively in the studio. That's a great idea about a more powerful iPad type thing, would be pretty cool. Might even be able to use it for field recording or location recording then with an appropriate interface? (thought of trying to do that with a Macbook Pro in a rucksack using Insomnia or similar software to stop it going to sleep, with an iPod touch hooked up to control Logic, but just seemed so fiddly I never got to figuring out if it was possible or not). Fingers crossed, the rate technology usually progresses you're probably not dreaming! Actually this is probably ideal, but I think not released yet and very expensive?! (and not sure if it's multi-touch):

![]() ![]() ![]() That's interesting, but if I could easily afford that I would already have a Lemur! A smaller version would be great though. It would be a very compact system as you say. We will see - the competition is beginning to wake up, any moment now, soon, hopefully, in not to long. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Yeah exactly, that's a ridiculous amount of money to spend for what you get, especially when there's bound to be better stuff around the corner...
