Hi Kymites
I've been trying to work on a new form of synthesis namely "The Kwerk synthesizer" but I'm finding that trying to do it in the spare bits of time that I have is happening so slowly. so I thought I might throw it open to the forum to make it a joint effort. The necessary files involved in the first prototype are very large and therefore I would use a non forum method to distribute the files.

The Idea is to take a constant type of sound i.e. a voice singing one note, a string section on one note and do a spectral analysis and loop the file. Then you find the average pitch , and the average amplitude of each partial so that you get a frozen sound . This is called the "body" . Then we subtract the body from the original looped analysis and for a new file called the Mid Kwerk. This Kwerk file cannot be played on its own but contains the quirks and deviations of the source sound.
Now because the body is static it can easily be replaced with other bodies or morphed between bodies or even synthesized, but all the time the looped kwerk added to the body maintains the nuances of real sound. Eventually a start kwerk and end kwerk could be derived in a similar way to get a real type of attack and decay.

I think that's enough at the moment as it opens a lot of possiblities.

Would anyone be interested in collaboration ?

thanks
Pete

This sounds like a great idea, Pete! Unfortunately, I'm up to my nostrils in work right now or I'd volunteer to help out. Collaboration via the Forum appeals greatly to me. But for now, I'm just a cheerleader.

Hi Pete,

I think your idea, the synth, and collaboration, are great. I too had thought it would be good if users could get to gether on projects like that. I'm sure many have been spending their time building the same things or at least partial sounds. Not knowing that they are doing the same thing as some one else. And with time at least for some of us being so scarce. Of which case I well have to do a lot of cheerleading too on this one. Except maybe to share some ideas when they come up.

Hi Pete,

Sounds interesting, this idea is it like what you could do with the PPG Waveterm, or am I wrong.

Armand.

Hi Armand
I'm not sure about the PPG but I don't think it used spectrol analysis , but I would be interested in what it is. Does any one know ??

Hi Pete,
The waveterm could take a sample and break it down to a series of waves, they called a wave table and then the wave tables could be played back at any point forward, backwards, etc. at what ever speed. They were loaded into a PPG keyboard. Waldorf does this on the microwave series. It would be like timbre frame resynthesis on Synclavier. What you are talking about is a little like LA synthesis (Roland D50), or AI (korg M1). Where a sample of bow pulled, a scrape, an attack, pluck, etc. is added to another sound, in those cases a synth, saw, or what ever to reproduce sound. But yes your is different and could be quite interesting.

Yes I think the start kwerk would give similar sounds as the roland or korg but the mid kwerk is a bit different.
The thing that inspired the kwerk was when I tried to time stretch sound to very long time i.e. 1 sec to 15 mins. probably using a similar techneque to the PPG. But all you heard was sine waves that moved so slow that they sounded like a synth and had no realisum. When I added a kwerk of my own voice looped at normal speed it put back the realisum . When I say added I don't mean mixed but added to the control of the sine waves. This put back some realisum and didn't sound like my voise at all.
I wonder if the PPG did this one ??

thanks

Hi Pete
WOW! Impressive

The principles of Kwerk seem close to some sounds I was kicking around a while back which I think will be of use / interest. I need to convert them to a similar design – It may take a few days for me to get my head around it all but I will most defiantly be back!

Best
Giles
