Hi SSC,

having some problems here this morning. Whenever I run any sound from either the prototypes or any other sound I've created, almost immediately after hitting Ctrl+Space Kyma stops running and I get a message "Kyma X application has stopped working" with an option to force close the app.

I can open samples in the sample editor and sometimes play them from the sound browser but the app freezes not long after as well.

Using Win7 64bit.

Hope you can help, thanks.

Hi Sean,

Can you please describe any changes to your system (hardware, software, operating system, disk organization) between the time you last used Kyma and this time? Thanks!

Also, could you please try starting up Kyma with the caps-lock key down? This will let you start it up without the Preferences (in case your preferences file got somehow mangled). Thanks!

Hi SSC,

Nothing had been changed on the system at all between last successful operation. I had been working in Kyma for the previous two or three days without any real issues and had shut down the system (as I usually do) at the end of the day by powering down everything and then switching the main supply to the studio off. I came back in next morning and noticed the problem as soon as I started working.

At first I thought it was related to the sound I had been working on which was pushing the processor but I backed of it's polyphony and was getting the same results. Previously I would get an OORT error and I might have to either initialise the DSP or just run something like the Clicks sound and it would calm down but this time the app was crashing almost immediately on run of the sound - the sound appears to compile and load fine but the app crashes.
At this point I started checking playing sounds in other ways (from the browser, opening and playing something within a sound file etc and observed the same app crashing immediately on running any sound.

Samples seem to play fine through the browser, I can drag a sample into a sound file and play it from the sound file no problem but if I run the disk player prototype Kyma crashes.

I did test starting Kyma with Caps lock on (sorry, I should have mentioned that) but no change.

The last software installs on this PC were the new video card software (March 3), two Microsoft XML service packs via windows update (March 2) and Java 7 Update 17 (March 8).

Do any of the files in your Kyma folder have a modification date within the last few days?

895 files were modified between 9:07 and 9:08 this morning, the time of the Kyma update.

In Edit>Preferences, try removing all Frequently Used Folders except for the Kyma folder.

Prior to that, Kyma Temporary Files was modified on 8 feb (not sure why). 32 folders were modified on 2 Jan - most recent prior Kyma update.

My Kyma folder is left exactly as it was installed and patched by updates. I keep my work and a copy of the sound library, expressions and any other folders from the Kyma folder I made any mods to in a separate folder. Five files in my work folder have been modified between 9 March and today. I can forward those if you like.

Only the C:\Kyma folder is listed in frequently used files.

Please double check that you are using the non SSE version.

Do you have a desktop shortcut set up? Please double-check that you are not pointing to an old version of Kyma.

just for curiosity's sake I ran the Kyma X No SSE2.exe file at that location and replicated the issue.

That's it then. It should be pointing to:

C:\Kyma\Kyma X.app\Contents\Windows\Kyma X No SSE2.exe

Hmm I'll try that again, but this short cut has been set up and working as expected for months.

I used to need to run the 'no SSE' version on a previous machine but this new box has been in operation for over 8 months running Kyma with no issues like this one

Could you please see if you can find out more information about the crash? The most likely culprit is some change to the Windows operating system itself that is causing Kyma to crash.

One possible source of additional information would be to go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. In the application tab, see if there is an event for the Kyma crash; if so, right-click on the event, select Properties and either paste it into this note, or, to reduce the bandwidth in the Forum, you could send it by email to symsound@symbolicsound.com.

Turns out to have been due to bad sectors on Sean's HDD. He installed Windows & Kyma on a new disk and everything is working again.
