I am looking to update my host computer for the Capy.....now that the firewire box is out....it looks like the ibook would be the ideal choice..

Can we expect the performance to be the same as with a Powerbook G3 + PC Card? How many tracks can you stream from disk with firewire/ibbook? Does anyone know if the drive speed on the ibooks / powerbooks are the same?

Next:

What is the chance of putting a headphone out on the capy? Am I the only one who would like to see it?

When do we get to see a "Capy-Lite" / one rack space......I has become *very* difficult to travel with my capy since I can no longer cary it on an airplane !....make sure the "capy-lite still has the 8 i/o tho! we need 'em!

Thanks!

The benchmarks reported in the press release were made on a 450 MHz lime green iBook (the newer iBooks should do at least as well).

Formerly, the performance of any laptop with PCMCIA was restricted by the speed of the PCMCIA interface. Expect much faster performance with the FireWire interface (up to 6 times faster for some things) and to be able to get 24 disk tracks (versus the 3 or 4 for PCMCIA).

The performance of a 450 MHz iBook using FireWire should be roughly the same as a 400 MHz desktop G4 using PCI (however some things will perform better using the iBook: downloads should be about 1.5 times faster, and you can get up to 24 mono 44.1 khz disk tracks simultaneously versus the 16-19 with the PCI interface).

Hi r,

With some imagination maybe this could be something like a "Capy-Lite"...

and the Kookaburra could feature the 150 Mhz 56311 DSP...with a nearly double clock speed over the Capybara's 80 Mhz 56309, you could squeeze a lot of processor cycles into that 1-space rack!

BTW, has anybody tried one of the mini-book PCs? Like the Cappuccino or Expresso? www.cappuccinopc.com
Unfortunately, neither seems to have a PC card socket...

Wave Digital makes a Micro Wave Ultra with two firewire ports.
